Mordecai McKenzie Born before 1765 Died 1825/26.
Mordecai McKenzie was born before 1765 as proven by the 1810 Census of Bracken County, Kentucky. The exact date of his birth and the names of his parents have not yet been proven. He is thought to have been born in Scotland as proven by the fact that his son Mordecai, Jr. stated in the 1880 census of Robertson County that his father [Mordecai, Sen.] was born in Scotland. There seems to be a family tradition that Mordecai's father was Patrick McKenzie who came from a locale near Edinburgh to Pennsylvania. The tradition is not clear as to whether Patrick came with seven brothers or he came with seven sons. The tradition is not clear as to whether Patrick was eleven when he came or his son Mordecai was eleven when the family came to America.Mordecai seems to have been born in Scotland and grown up in Pennsylvania and married there. It seems possible from the tax list of Mason County, Kentucky that Mordecai left Pennsylvania c1793 and came to what was then Mason County. Family tradition has it that his brothers scattered to various other locations. There is an unusual family connection with a Jane McKenzie of Mason Co., Ky. Jane McKenzie, daughter of Mordecai (born c1732, Scotland) and his wife (first name not known) but whose surname was Matthews, who was born 1753. Jane married in Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1778 to Robert Downing (born c1752, Washington, Pennsylvania).
Robert and Jane had the following children:1. James Downing - Born Jan 1779 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. 2. Susannah Downing - Born 20 Feb 1781 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. 3. Thomas Downing - Born 1783 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. 4. Nancy Downing - Born 16 Sept 1786 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. 5. Mary Downing - Born 1788 in Bourbon County (now Mason Co.), Kentucky 6. Sarah Downing - Born 1 Jan 1790 in Mason County, Kentucky 7. Robert Downing - Born 16 Jan 1791 in Mason County, Kentucky 8. Priscilla Downing - Born 1794 in Mason County, Kentucky 9. Elizabeth Downing - Born 15 Oct 1795 in Mason County, Kentucky 10. Rebecca Downing - Born 1798 in Mason County, Kentucky 11. Jane Downing - Born 5 March 1800 in Mason County, Kentucky 12. Ann Nancy Downing - Born 16 Oct 1762 in Brooke County, Virginia [now W. Va.]
Washington County, Pennsylvania was created in 1781 from Westmoreland County. Brooke County, Virginia [now W. Va.] was created in 1796 from Ohio County. Charlestown [now called Wellsburg] was the county seat of Brooke and Wheeling was the county seat of Ohio County. Ohio and Brooke counties are across the state line from Washington County. The date of birth for Ann Nancy Downing can not be explained and the year must be in error. A Robert and Timothy Downing appear in the 1787 Tax List of Bourbon County, Kentucky. They appear in List "A" District of Miles Withers Conway in the area of the county "North of Main Licking." This would be Mason/Bracken County later. In this tax list, Robert Downing is shown with no "white" males between the ages of 16 and 26 and that he paid taxes on 2 Blacks under 16 years of age, 2 horses (colts or mules), and 9 cows. Timothy was shown with no white males between the ages of 16 and 26, paying taxes on 1 horse and 6 cows. The law creating Mason County out of Bourbon County was on 5 Nov 1788 and the new county came into being on 1 May 1789. Robert Downing was listed among the Bourbon County signers of a petition on 19 Sep 1787 asking that the county be divided and a new county [Mason Co.] be created. Robert Downing left a will in Mason County dated 1 Feb 1802 naming his wife Jane and his children. There is still another unusual family connection. Alexander McKenzy is also found in the 1787 tax list of Bourbon County, Kentucky. He is found in tax list "C". This is not an area north of the main Licking River so the area in which he lived would not become Mason County. Alexander was found to have had no white males between 16 and 26 years of age and paid taxes on 3 horses (mares or mules) and 7 head of cattle. The family of one Alexander McKenzie of Lewis County, Ky. is a well documented family. His connection with our Mordecai is not yet been proven. Alexander was born in Scotland and died 26 Aug 1807, in the newly created Lewis County. It would appear that he moved to Mason County 1794/5 that became Lewis County in 1808. The law creating Lewis County was enacted 2 Dec 1806 and the county was formed 1 Apr 1807 entirely out of Mason County. His wife's name was Ann or Anna Bell. The following is a list of their children:1. Jane McKenzie - Born 15 Mar 1788, Pennsylvania 2. Elizabeth McKenzie - Born Dec 1788, Bourbon County 3. John McKenzie - Born 11 Oct 1790, Bourbon County 4. Mary McKenzie - Born 1 Oct 1793, Bourbon County 5. Thomas McKenzie - Born c1795, Mason County 6. Alexander S. McKenzie - Born c1801, Mason County 7. Nancy McKenzie - Born 22 Feb 1808, Lewis County
The reason for giving the names of the children is that Robert Downing and Jane (McKenzie) Downing had daughters of the same names.Mordecai, Jr., son of Mordecai, Sen, also stated in the 1880 census of Robertson County that his mother was born in Pennsylvania. Mordecai seems to have come to Kentucky married, probably with some children. We know that his daughter, Jane, was born in Pennsylvania 1791/92. This would mean that Mordecai was probably married at least by c1790. If he was twenty-five when he married he would have been born c1765, however, his second wife Deliah Brashears seems to have been born as early as c1755, possibly suggesting an earlier birth date for Mordecai or that she was older. In the 1795 tax list of Mason County, Mordecai is listed for the first time as having a male over sixteen living with him. With the dates for his birth just given this male seems to be too old to be a son because this male in the tax list would have been born by c1779. It could have been a younger brother or even a brother-in-law. If Mordecai was born c1765 he would have been about fourteen years older than the male in the 1795 tax list. This young male in the tax list would have been born during the Revolutionary War. This male in Mordecai's household could however point to an earlier date of birth for Mordecai. What ever the case, it is likely that the male in the tax list came to Kentucky with Mordecai, his wife, and at least Jane. It is possible that the young male just mentioned is the John McKenzie who died 24 May 1830, in Nicholas County, Ky. who married Isabelle Crawford 21 Jul 1803 in Mason County, Kentucky. There is also a Nancy McKinsey who married Enes Cooper 29 Dec 1806 in Bracken County. She has not yet been identified but is probably a part of this family in some way. There is a Malcom McKinsey in the records who was a witness for the marriage of James Nowers and Margaret Barkley on 27 Jul 1819 in Mason County. He has not been positively identified. The first record that we have been able to find of Mordecai in the records of Kentucky is 10 Sep 1793 in Mason County, Kentucky, paying taxes. This would indicate that he would have at least been in Mason County by that time. He would have probably come in the spring of 1793. The Indian wars were still going on in western Ohio and the final battle would not occur until August, 1794 at Fallen Timbers. We can glean from the Memoirs of Benjamin Van Cleve what a trip from Pennsylvania to Mason County
The area around present-day Augusta was part of a Revolutionary War grant by Virginia to Capt. Philip Buckner, who had first visited there in 1781. One historical account records that when Buckner returned in 1796 with forty Virginia families to settle on his land he found that there were ten Pennsylvania families already settled there. Some of them would purchase lots from him. There is also an account that in the year 1775 a party composed of ten men [from Pennsylvania] Samuel Wells, Hayden Wells, Thomas Tebbs, John Tebbs, John Rust, Mathew Rust, Thomas Young, William Tripplett, Richard Masterton, and Jonathan Higgs - came to what is now Bracken County. They stayed only a short time as the Indians were operating out of the Licking River, and their towns on the upper Great Miami, Little Miami and Mad River were not too far distant, making Bracken County untenable at that time. These Pennsylvanians turned back to the Limestone Creek-Lawrence Creek area just to the east where there were other parties that had recently come down the Ohio River. Safety in numbers! Are the ten men and the ten families the same. There seems to be a great separation in time for that to be true. The reason for mentioning this is the importance of Pennsylvania. Mordecai McKenzie who also came from Pennsylvania would have been in the vicinity at the time of Buckner's arrival in 1796. Thomas Bra[o]shear also came to Mason County in 1793 from Pennsylvania the same year as Mordecai. Mordecai married as his second wife, Delilah Bra[o]shear, in 1819 who seems to be a widow. Her husband has not been identified but it does not seem to be Thomas. We have not yet been able to locate what part of Mason County Mordecai settled in but it was probably a part of the county that became Bracken County in 1796. By 1814, twenty-one years after his arrival, we know from a deed that he owned land that drained into the North Fork of the Licking. It is probable that he settled south of the North Fork of the Licking on land that would eventually become Robertson County in 1867. This would be the northern part of present-day Robertson County. His name defies a standardized spelling through out the Kentucky records. Undoubtedly he was named for Mordecai of the Bible who was the foster father of Esther. Mordecai has been misspelled several different ways and I have used the spelling as it appeared in the record. Likewise McKenzie has been misspelled several different ways until c1830 when it begins to appear with the usual spelling, McKenzie.
The tax lists of Mason County show the following for Mordecai McKenzie:1793 Mordica McKinsey, 10 September, page 9, one male over 21, 1 horse, 5 cows. 1794 Mordaci McKinsey, 19 June, page 11, one male over 21, 6 cows. 1795 Mordaci McKinsey, page 15, one male over 21, one male over 16, 1 horse, 6 cows. 1796 Mordaci McKinsey, page 16, one male over 21, one male over 16, 1 horse, 3 cows.
[The male over 16 in the 1795 and 1796 tax lists has not been identified but as stated before could be a younger brother or brother-in-law. There is an outside chance that Mordecai is a little older than we presently think and this could be his oldest son].On 14 December 1796, Bracken County was created out of the eastern part of Campbell County and the western part of Mason County and on 1 March 1797 officially became the twenty-third county. The act to create Bracken County in 1796 read: Beginning on the Ohio River, one and one-half miles below the mouth of Lee's Creek [present-day Lee Creek], from thence a direct line to the North fork, such a course that intersected the end of a line drawn nine miles due west from Mason Court House [then located in Washington; this line intersected the North Fork just below the mouth of present-day Whippoorwill Branch]; thence a direct line to the mouth of Beaver Creek, on Licking [present-day Beaver Creek is located in Harrison County, the mouth of which is at Claysville]: thence a direct line to a point half way between the confluence of the north and south forks thereon; thence a direct line to the mouth of Big Stepstone, on the Ohio River, up the same to the beginning. Starting in 1797, Mordecai is found in Bracken County. This we are taking is proof that he originally settled in the part of Mason from which Bracken County was created. By the 1800 Census, Bracken County had a population of 2,606.
The tax lists of Bracken County give the following information for Mordecai:1797 Could not find Mordecai in that year. 1798 Tax list is missing for that year. 1799 Mordrick McKensey, page 9, 27 May 27, one male over 21, one male over 16, 2 horses. Mordica McKinsey, page 11, 28 August, one male over 21, one male over 16, 2 horses. [These are probably the same person and are probably Mordecai]. 1800 Tax list is missing for that year. 1801 A large ink stain on the page covers up most of the names. 1802 Mordecai McKinsey, page 13, 17 August, one male over 21, one male 16 to 21, 1 horse. [It is interesting to note that this is the last year that this male over 16 appears with Mordecai. John McKenzie married in 1803in Mason County and this makes a good case that this male was in fact John McKenzie. However if this is the case, then there should be two males over twenty one. In this could be another male who has just attained the age of 16]. 1803 Mordecai McKinsey, page 11, 20 May, one male over 21. 1804 Mordecai McKinsey, page 12, 12 July, one male over 21. 1805 Mordecai McKinsey, page 11, 2 July, one male over 21, 1 horse. 1806 Mordica McKinsey, page 13, 13 May, one male over 21, one male 16 to 21, 2 horses. 1807 Mordaci McKinsey, page 13, 9 April, one male over 21, 3 horses. 1808 Mordacai McKinsey, page 13, 29 April, 80 acres, Thornton survey, one male over 21, one male 16 to 21, 5 horses. 1809 Mordecai McKinsey, page 12, 29 April, 80 acres, one male over 21, 4 horses. 1810 Mordicai McKinsey, page 11, 18 July, 81 acres, Thornton survey, one male over 21, 4 horses. The 1810 Census of Bracken County, Kentucky, page 143 shows Mordica McKensey head of household with the following: 1 male under 10 (1800-1810) [Mordecai Jr.] 1 male 10-16 (1794-1800) [could this be the Malcom McKenzie mentioned above who witnessed a marriage in Mason County in 1819] 1 male 16-26 (1784-1794) [William] 1 male over 45 (before 1765) [Mordecai] 1 female 16-26 (1784-1794) [Jane] 1 female over 45 (before 1765) [his first wife that was born in Pennsylvania] 1811 Mordecai McKinsey, page 12, 30 July, 182 acres, one male over 21, 4 horses. 1812 Mordica McKensie, page 10, 30 July, 182 acres, one male over 21, 5 horses. 1813 Mordecai McKinsey, page 14, 7 April, 182 acres, one male over 21, 4 horses. 1814 Tax list for that year is missing.
Mordecai's daughter, Jane, married Robert Downing in 1813 and seems to have moved to Mason County that year. This Robert Downing is probably the son of Robert Downing and Jane (McKenzie) Downing that moved to Bourbon County, Kentucky by 1787. This unusual family connection has not yet been explained but it seems that Jane (McKenzie) Downing could be the sister of Mordecai McKenzie, the father of Jane.

It would seem that Mordecai's first wife was deceased by 1814 since she is not named in the deed for the purchase of land from Anthony and Mary Thornton. She seems to be present in the 1810 Census, therefore she must have died between 1810 and 1814. There is a marriage record showing that Mordecai McKenzie married Deliah Brochears in Bracken County, on 28 September 1819 by Joseph Carter (Book 1, page 80). From the 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850 census reports, Deliah seems to have been born before 1765 or c1762. However the 1860 census of Mason County, states she was 105 years old making her date of birth ca. 1755. It seems that when she married Mordecai that she was a widow. Her maiden name and the name of her first husband have not been found. According to the 1850 and 1860 Census of Mason County she was born in Pennsylvania. She seems to have had children by her first husband.Who is this Delilah Broshears? There is a Thomas Broshears born c1752 Pennsylvania who died c1822 in Bracken County. He was the son of William Jones Broshears and his wife Sara Wallingford. A Thomas Broshears begins to appear in 1793 in Mason County the same year as Mordecai McKenzie. Did they come together from Pennsylvania to Mason County? Thomas Broshears begins to acquire land and slaves. Then in 1799 another Thomas Broshears begins to appear just as a male over 21. This younger Thomas appears until 1803 and then does not appear again in Bracken County. The 1810 Census of Bracken County shows that Delila Broshears [page 149] had the following in her household:
2 males under 10 [1800-1810] 3 males 10 to 16 [1794-1800] 1 female under 10 [1800-1810] 1 female 16 to 26 [1784-1794] 1 female 26 to 45 [1765-1794]
It is not yet known which of the females in the census was Delilah. It is not known who these other people were in the household that the census taker stated that Delilah was the head of household. This census also shows her neighbors:
Line 3 Edward Tucker [16 to 26] 1784 to 1794 Line 4 Elijah Tucker [16 to 26] 1784 to 1794 Line 5 Delila Broshears [26 to 45] 1765 to 1784 Line 6 James Case [over 45] before 1765 Line 7 Samuel Inscho [26 to 45] 1765 to 1784 Line 8 Joseph Inscho [over 45] before 1765 Line 9 Thomas Prater [26 to 45] 1765 to 1784
The 1810 Census of Bracken County also shows the older of the two Thomas Broshears [page 140] with the following information:
3 males under 10 [1800-1810] 1 male 16 to 26 [1784-1794] 1 male over 45 [before 1765] probably Thomas Broshears 3 females 10 to 16 [1794-1800] 1 female over 45 [before 1765] probably the wife of Thomas
This census report makes a strong case that Thomas was not the first husband of Delilah and that she could be a widow by 1810, with children. The 1820 Census of Bracken County, Kentucky, page 4 shows Mordecai McKinsey with his neighbors. William, his so has not been found in the census for that year. The following can be gleaned from page 4 for Mordecai.
Line 18 Mordicia McKinsey Line 20 James Garrison Line 21 Thomas Tucker Line 35 Edward Tucker Line 36 Eli Tucker Line 39 Mathew Orms
James Garrison was born before 1775. James Garrison seems to have had a daughter Francis, or Fanny that married William Hall of Nicholas County. Mordicia was a security for their marriage. The three Tuckers seem to be brothers. Thomas Tucker was born between 1775 and 1794; Edward Tucker was born 1775 and 1794; and Eli Tucker was born 1775 and 1794. Mathew Orms was born before 1775. Ann Tucker, the daughter of Edward Tucker married Mordecai McKenzie Jr. After Ann died, Mordecai Jr. married second Rebecca Orms, daughter of Matthew Orms.It is interesting to note that Mordica McKinzy is listed as security for the marriage of William Hall to Fanny Garrison in Bracken County, Kentucky. The bond was dated 8 June 1820, William Hall along with Mordica McKinzy were securities, and John Colglazer, attest to marriage bond. It is not yet known what the connection was between Mordecai and William Hall.
The 1820 Census of Bracken County, Kentucky, page 4, line 18 shows Mordecia McKinsey head of household with the following:

Mordecai Sen. may have died in 1825 or 1826. We do not find him again in the tax lists of Bracken County. Delilah McKenzie is found in the 1830 Census of Mason County on page 220 next to Jerimah Tucker. Jerimah was listed as being 20 to 30 years old (being born 1800-1810) with a female who is probably his wife also being 20 to 30 years old (born 1800-1810) and a son and a daughter both under five years of age (born 1825-1830). This must be Jerimah Tucker who married Orphe Kay on 17 September 1825 in Mason County.
Line 26 Deliah McKenzie Line 27 Jerimah Tucker
The census had the following information for Delilah:
1 male 20 to 30 (1800-1810) [this could be a younger son of Mordecai Sen. He had two sons of this age group. The other one could be living with Jane McKenzie Downing in Mason County.] 2 females 15 to 20 (1810-1815) 1 female 60 t0 70 (1760-1770) Delilah
Mordecai McKenzie Jr. was found in the Mason County Census on page 223 and along with his sister Jane McKenzie Downing. Jane' age was given as 30 to 40 (born between 1790 and 1800). It would appear that her husband Robert may have been deceased by that time. She had living with her a male under five (1825-1830), two females 5 to 10 (1820-1825) and two males 20 to 30 (1800-1810). Since she married in 1813 it is not known who these two males were unless one was a younger brother that was living with her since her father, Mordecai Sn., had recently died.

Mrs. Delila McKinsey is found in the 1840 Census of Mason County, Northern District, page 15 with the following information:
1 female 10 to 15 (1825-1830) 1 female 20 to 30 (1800-1810) 1 female 50 to 60 (1780-1790) [This must be Delila but the age group must wrong. She was reported as being 105 in 1860]
The 1850 Census of Mason County shows the following for Jane McKenzie Downing and Deliah Brashears McKenzie, page 15, dated 24 July 1850:
194/197 Joseph Downing age 72 Real Estate value $7000 born Pennsylvania Frances Downing 60 Pennsylvania

Delila McKinsey and Jane McKenzie Downing have been found in the 1860 census of Mason County, Maysville District, dated 24 July 1860, pages 207 and 208 with the following information:

[Robert and Jane Downing are probably children of Jane McKenzie Downing and her husband Robert. They could, however, be husband and wife but with the name Jane it seems more likely that she is a daughter. Since the young Jane was born about 1829/30 that must mean that Robert Downing Sen. probably died c 1829 since Jane appears in the 1830 census of Mason County as head of household without her husband Robert.].

[Pennsylvania was given as the birth place however this could be error. It is known that there is a family by that name that is well documented in Maryland the birth place given in 1850. There is however a family of that name in the records of Pennsylvania at that time. Arabilla Thompson age 14 seems to be the same person as Mary Bell Thompson, age 4, in the 1850 census.]. Deliah Brashears McKenzie probably died not long after this. According to this census she seems to have been born ca. 1755 in Maryland but it seems that the likely place is Pennsylvania.
A list of the children of Mordecai McKenzie and his first wife has not been found. The following is a list of people that lived with him in the 1810 and the 1820 census shows that he could have had four sons and three daughters. From this information and marriage records of the area he could have had the following children:
1. William McKenzie - Born c1790. There is a male over 16 that begins to appear in the Bracken County Tax list for the first time in 1806. This could mean the date of birth of this person was 1790.
2. Jane Mckenzie - 1791/2 in Pennsylvania. She was married by Archibald Alexander to Robert Downing 4 Mar 1813 in Bracken County, Kentucky (Book 1, page 31).
3. Son - probably born between 1794 and 1800. Could be Malcom McKenzie who witnessed a marriage in Mason County in 1819. Malcom has not been found in any other records.
4. Mordecai McKenzie, Jr. - Born 1800/01 probably in Bracken County, Kentucky.
5. male - Born between 1804 and 1810. Probably not a son.
6. female - Born between 1804 and 1810. Probably not a daughter.
7. female - Born between 1804 and 1810. Probably not a daughter.
Mordecai McKenzie Born between ca. 1800/02 Died after 1880
Mordecai was born between 1799 and 1801 in Kentucky according to the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 census reports. His father was Mordecai McKenzie Sn. proven by a document dated __ July 1816 where he states "my youngest son Mordecai McKinsey". Bracken County was established 1797, and it would appear for now that would be the place of his birth, since his father Mordecai was there by the time of his son Mordecai's birth.Mordecai Mckenzie married 1st Ann Tucker in Bracken County, bond dated 30 March 1824 and signed by Edward Tucker. Ann or Anna Tucker was the daughter of Edward Tucker and Polly Burton. According to the 1820 Census of Bracken County Mordecai Sen was living near Edward Tucker.

Solomon Lee McKenzie Born 7 Nov 1844 Died 18 Jul 1930
Solomon Lee McKenzie was born 7 Nov 1844 in Bracken County, Kentucky. His death certificate says that he was the son of Mordecai McKenzie and Rebecca (Ormes) McKenzie. Rebecca's name was spelled Harms instead of Ormes on the certificate.Solomon married Sarah Jane ("Sally") Phillips. She was the daughter of Leonard Phillips and Roenna Tucker, sister of Ann Tucker, the first wife of his father Mordecai. Sarah Jane was born 1843.Solomon is found in the 1850 Census of Bracken County, Kentucky, page 398, taken 24 July 1850. He was listed as age 7 in the household of his father, Mordecai.
Mordecai, Junior, was not found in the 1860 index of the Kentucky census for that year, therefore Solomon has not been found in that census.(update 6/17/2013 by: JMW)1860 United States Federal Census Name: Mardica(Mordecai) McKenzie Age in 1860: 60 Birth Year: abt 1800 Birthplace: Kentucky Home in 1860: Eastern District, Bracken, Kentucky Gender: Male Post Office: Augusta Household Members: Name Age Mardica McKenzie 60 Rebecca McKenzie 48 Solomon McKenzie 14 George McKenzie 12 Georgia McKenzie 8 Lucy A McKenzie 6
A law was enacted on 11 February 1867 creating Robertson County out of Mason and Bracken Counties. The law became effective 1 August 1867.
The 1870 Census of Robertson County, Kentucky, Mount Olivet, Voting Precinct #2, taken 24 July 1870, page 442, shows the following for Solomon McKenzie:
Dwelling #52 Family #53 line age occupation place born 24 Solomon McKenzie 26 Farmer $11,520/$520 Ky. 25 Sarah J. McKenzie 26 Keeping House Ky. 26 Josifine F. McKenzie 5 Ky. 27 Teary J. McKenzie 3 Ky. 28 Charlie T. McKenzie 2 Ky. Dwelling #53 Family #54 29 Thomas Brierly 85 Retired Farmer Ky. 30 Roanna Phillips 53 House Keeper Ky.
Roanna Phillips listed next door to Solomon McKenzie and Sarah Jane (Phillips) McKenzie is the mother of Sarah Jane. Roanna married Leonard Phillips 21 August 1835 in Mason County, Kentucky. Leonard Phillips is the father of Sarah Jane. From her age in the 1870 Census, Roanna should have been born ca. 1817 in Bracken County, Kentucky. This means that Roanna was about 27 when her daughter Sarah Jane was born and about 18 when she married Leonard Phillips. There is a possible connection of the Brierly family with the Tucker family. George Brierly, born ca. 1757 in Maryland came to Mason County and according to record married there on 27 March 1793 (age approximately 36). He had been a soldier in the American Revolution and had appeared in Mason County Court on 10 September 1832 for a pension for services rendered in the war. His wife at the time was Mary. George died in Bracken County on 30 September 1833. Mary Brierly, the widow of the pensioner, appointed Charles C. Tucker to be her lawful attorney on 9 May 1853 in Bracken County. On 28 July 1852, Thomas Brierly appeared in Bracken County Court and stated that he knew the pensioner and his widow and he also said that they were married as the widow had declared and that her husband had received a pension, and that the pensioner died at the time and place as stated by his widow. The 1870 census says that Thomas Brierly was born ca. 1785 in Kentucky but the 1850 census says he was born in Maryland in 1790. He was probably born in Maryland could be a son of George Brierly by a previous marriage. Also in the 1850 census Thomas Brierly whose wife's name was Margaret (born Virginia) has living with him William Tucker, age 19 (born 1831). It is possible that Charles C. Tucker mentioned could have been related to Roanna (Tucker) Phillips and possibly a brother.Solomon McKenzie is found in the 1880 Census of Robertson County, Kentucky, Precinct #2, Mt. Olivet, Volume 25, E.D. 180, Sheet 10, Line 35, page 275B with the following information:

His obituary was in the Lexington Herald, 19 July 1930 and stated that he was a retired farmer. He died at the home of his son on Bryan Station Pike north of Lexington. He was the son of Maudakie [Mordecai] McKenzie and Becky Harms [Ormes]. He was member of the Elkhorn Christian Church.Solomon was a tall thin man. He always wore a blue suit and a starched white shirt. In later years he lived with Hargus and Aggie. He was an avid fiddle player. POSSIBLE CONNECTIONS TO OUR MORDECAI
Martha McKenzie - Born ca. 1839. This is probably the Martha McKinsey who married Henry A. Baldwin on 14 November 1861, Mason County. Her father has not yet been proven.
Mordock Otis McKenzie (1738-1813) - He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, ca. 1738, the son of John McKenzie and Catherine Gabriel. He seems to have come alone to the colony of Maryland, where he spent a few years owning property in Montgomery County. He later moved to Culpepper County, Virginia, where he married Jemima Chapman, ca. 1764. They later moved to Walkers Creek on the New River in Giles County, Virginia, where Jemima and four children were massacred by Indians in May 1776. Two of the young girls were taken by the Indians in the raid and remained in the Detroit and Sandusky area for 18 years. Mordock and his son Isaac (b.1758) were out looking for their horses when this happened. Mordock was to marry three more times after this. He married second Eunice Allen and third Sally. He died on Five Mile Fork of East River in 1813. Two of his sons, Isaac, and John (by his fourth wife) were to settle in what was then Floyd County, Kentucky. Isaac served in the Revolutionary War, and John in the last two weeks of the War of 1812. John's wife was Sary and they had James, Daniel, John, Alexander, Isaac, Elizabeth, Polly . Of the other children of Mordock, a son went to Tennessee, one to Illinois and one remained in Giles County, Virginia. In the History of Giles County, Virginia, Mordock's name is also spelled Mordica. This is the same spelling of our Mordecai in some of the Mason and Bracken County records. We do not know of a connection between Mordock and our Mordecai. Mordock would have been of the same generation as the father of Mordecai and it appears that Mordock is not the father of our ancestor.
Murdock McKenzey - was granted 560 acres on the Licking River in what was then Fayette County, Virginia (Kentucky). Survey date 12 September 1784; grant date 20 August 1786. Possibly the same person as Mordock. The Licking River is over 150 miles long, and today stretches from Floyd County to the Ohio River opposite Cincinnati. We do not know the location of the land grant on the Licking River.
William McKinsey - is found in the Fayette County, Kentucky tax list of 1787, a neighbor of John Paterson. The name of what appears to be Mordecai Senior's oldest son was William.
Alexander McKinzy - is found in the Bourbon County, Kentucky tax list of 1787. Mordock had a grandson named Alexander, the son of John.
Reuben McKenzie - was married to Susan ______. He assisted in the building of the fort at Lexington, Kentucky in 1782. He fought in the Battle of Blue Licks where he was wounded and escaped.
