Miller Family
notes
For Peter Miller (Generation #1)
Peter Miller and various members of his family appear on census records
in Kentucky starting in 1830.
The 1830 and 1840 census records show him and his family members living in Mason Co, Kentucky.
Later, in 1850 on the Bracken Co census they are shown as follows:
Peter Miller, age 64, born in Pennsylvania, wife: Mary, age 57, born in Kentucky and son:
Thomas, age 15, born in Kentucky.
After the 1850 census record, Peter and Mary Miller disappear from the Kentucky census records, so it is
assumed that they died after this.
Peter Miller was bondsman to several Mason Co marriages.
These are listed in the Mason Co, Kentucky Marriage Records, 1804-60 Vols II-VI
and include the following entries:
Name: Thomas Thompson, Spouse: Mary Miller, Marriage Date: 7 Nov 1836
Name: Samuel B. Ward, Spouse, Matilda Ann Miller, Marriage Date: 3 Nov 1838
Name: John Miller, Spouse: Susan Atchison, Marriage Date: 24 Mar 1829
Name: Larkin Lunchford, Spouse: Margaret Jane Miller, Marriage Date: 2 Aug 1830
For John Miller (Generation #2)
1. An obit for Peter B Miller indicates that about 1852 "he went to housekeeping with his mother on the
farm which he owned at his death." This suggests that whoever his father was, he was already dead at this
time.
2. Several census records indicate that Peter B Miller's father was from Pennsylvania.
3. The Mason Co marriage records show a marriage record for John Miller and Susan Atchison on 24 Mar 1829
with Peter Miller as bondsman. This marriage fits in nicely with the birth of Peter B Miller, since he was
born 3 years later. Also, it would have made sense for John Miller to have named his first son, Peter, after
his father.
4. A Susan Miller is shown on the 1840 census record as living alone with 3 small children one of whom was
a male child between the age of 5 and 10. This matches Peter B Miller's age, as he would have been 8 years old
at the time. It is also consistent with the evidence that Peter B Miller's father had already died and later
he (Peter B Miller) and his mom set up housekeeping on their farm later on.
5. The 1860 census record shows that Peter B Miller's oldest son's name was John, most likely named after
his father.
For Peter B Miller (Generation #3)
"PETER B MILLER, AGED CITIZEN DIES
The death of Peter B Miller, whose real feeble condition had previously been noted on various occasions in the
ADVANCE, occured at the very early hour of 12:30 last Friday morning August 28th. His demise was not
unexpected, as he had taken but little nourishment for some time and having been helpless for weeks, it was
noted that he grew weeker day by day.
Deceased was a native of Mason County, having been born near Dover, June 3, 1832. About 55 years ago he went
into housekeeping with his mother on the farm which he owned at his death and which is about three miles from
town on the Bridgeville Pike. Two years later he married Miss Surrilda Mitchell, who for a half century was
his faithful companion and, who preceded him to the grave only a brief time.
Twelve children were born to them and only two survive, Joseph T Miller of town and Sylvester Miller of
Portsmouth, Ohio. Besides there are about a score of grand-children, and a number of great-grandchildren.
Uncle Pete, as he was familiary known, was a man who attended to his business, who would harm no one and who
would rather suffer injustice than create a disturbance. He was a good neighbor, an exemplary husband and
affectionate father. He became a member of the Baptist Church about 35 years ago and during those many years
he lived a faithful and devoted Christian life.
Funeral services were conducted at the Mt Olivet Baptist Church Sunday morning at 10:30 by the Pastor, the
Rev. F.P. Gates after which the remains were borne to the Mt. Olivet Cemetery and laid to rest in the family
lot."
