Unit Information

Company A, 1st Kentucky Cavalry (Union) was one of the original companies in the 1st Kentucky Cavalry Regiment, a well-known Union volunteer cavalry unit from central and southeastern Kentucky, often called "Wolford's Cavalry" or the "Wild Riders." The regiment organized in the summer and fall of 1861 at Liberty (Casey County), Burkesville, and Monticello, Kentucky. It mustered into federal service on October 28, 1861, at Camp Dick Robinson for a three-year term. Colonel Frank Lane Wolford commanded the regiment; he was a colorful, outspoken leader from the region. [1]
