Lincoln County was formed in 1780 from Kentucky County, Virginia. Stanford, originally Logan's Fort and an early settlement along the Wilderness Trail, is the county seat and the second-oldest town in Kentucky.
Lincoln County is surrounded by Rockcastle, Pulaski, Casey, Boyle, and Garrard Counties.
