Samuel Shannon Family
Revolutionary War chaplain, educator, and Kentucky pioneer
Samuel Shannon was born in Ireland about 1749 and graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1776. Ordained into the Presbyterian Church in 1781, he also served in the Revolutionary War as a chaplain and Dragoon leader. On 3 June 1787, he married Mary E. "Ann" Henning (born c. 1752 in England) in Augusta County, Virginia.
The family moved to Kentucky in 1789, appearing on the Fayette County tax list. Samuel served as a chaplain with General Scott in the Blackhawk War (1791) and was appointed a trustee of the Kentucky Academy in 1794. He later helped found the Presbyterian Synod at Salem in Washington County, Indiana.
