Giles Martin Samuel Family
Pioneers in Westward Expansion
Giles Martin Samuel, the younger, was born 25 April 1785. His father, Giles Samuel, Sr., migrated from Virginia to Kentucky with other Baptist families, embodying the era's spirit of "manifest destiny." By 1792, Giles Samuel, Sr. was among the eight citizens of Frankfort who committed $3,000 in specie to bring the Kentucky State Capitol to Frankfort.
Giles Samuel, Sr. married twice; his first wife is believed to be Ann Miss Martin, and his second was Martha Slaughter. Following Giles Sr.'s death, Martha Slaughter Samuel relocated with other family members to Boone County, Missouri.

- William E. Samuel (b. 13 March 1777, VA) — Married Susan Ware in 1806; moved to Tazwell County, IL.
- Sarah Samuel (b. 9 November 1782) — Married Langston Bacon; settled in Missouri.
- Giles Martin Samuel (b. 25 April 1785) — Married Letitia Cummins in 1823 in Howard County, MO. Children included Napoleon, William Giles Martin, and Clintonia Bacon Samuel McDonald.
- Jesse Samuel (b. 21 December 1787 · d. before 1819)
- Edgecomb S. S. Samuel (b. 15 November 1792) — Married Mary Virginia Carter in 1817. Children included Stephen S. S. and Mary Virginia (married James Grier McDonald).
- Betsy Samuel (b. 5 November 1794)
- Presley Samuel (b. 21 November 1798) — Married Sarah Morrison in 1828 in MO; moved to Illinois.
- Malinda Samuel (b. 12 February 1801) — Married James Sullenger in 1821 in Boone County, MO.
- Francis Slaughter Samuel (b. 20 February 1805) — Never married.
