James Shannon was born about 1790 in Kentucky. He served as a Private in Captain Peter Dudley's Company, Boswell's Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Light Infantry during the War of 1812. Following the war, he married Jane Daniel (born c. 1799 in Virginia) on 19 July 1817 in Franklin County. James was a saddler by trade and held an esteemed position in Frankfort society as a city trustee, magistrate, and justice of the peace. He also served on committees for public works, including the construction of the third capitol building and the new courthouse. He died on 2 July 1869 and is buried in the Frankfort Cemetery.
