Wolfe County was formed in 1860, the 110th of Kentucky's 120 counties to be created. The county was formed from parts of Breathitt , Owsley , Powell , and Morgan Counties. Since it's initial creation, Wolfe County has twice lost land to the formation of newer counties; first to Menifee County in 1869 and then to Lee County a year later. Today Wolfe County encompasses 227 square miles.
