Looking for information concerning my mother's maternal grandfather,John ELAM, who in the fall of 1884
conceived a child with
Emily BAILEY,daughter of Gabriel and Paulina BAILEY of Wolfe County. That child was my grandmother, Delora
Elam, born July 16,
1895. I have found no evidence that John and Emily were married. One of Emily's grand daughters told me that
Emily claimed that
she had divorced John because he was a drunkard and that Emily's sister, Louisa Bailey AMBURGEY, said this
was not true, that
"John was not that kind of a man." Louisa was only about 8 when Delora was born, but married Robert Amburgey
in 1903 and moved to Beattyville in Lee County, KY. By 1915 they were living in Washington State. On the
1900 census, Emily is listed as a single white
female, living with her father on his farm in Wolfe County. Delora is listed as Gabriel Bailey's grand
daughter and also living on the
Bailey farm. The name Elam appears with Delora's but was lined through by the census taker. Have not been
able to find any
information on John. If anyone's research uncovers a possible link to John, I would be most happy to hear
from you.
