Pre-War Profession Lawyer, Mexican War, politician. War Service November 1861 Col. of 5th Kentucky, fought Union Gen. W Nelson on Kentucky- Virginia border, April 1862 Brig. Gen. in command of a brigade under Gen. H Marshall, Kentucky campaign, operations in southwest Virginia, commanded Dept. of East Tennessee, requested relief from duty in November 1863, joined Ransom's division in Trans-Allegheny region, served in Wheeler's cavalry in Kelly's division in Atlanta campaign, served in southwest Virginia. Post War Career Farmer, politician, US senator.
