Cheat
Mountain, January 1862 resigned, helped organize Indiana militia, September 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of
Volunteers,
November 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 4th Divn/XIV Corps at Chickamauga, October 1862
chief of
Staff in Army of the Cumberland, commanded New Orleans defenses, commanded Department of Arkansas.
Brevet Promotions Brig. Gen. U.S.A. March 2 1867, Maj. Gen. U.S.A. March 2 1867.
Post War Career Army service, duty in Reconstruction, frontier duty, US senator (briefly), court martialed for
conduct in a campaign against the Sioux, resigned 1877.
