Pre-War Profession Lawyer, Mexican war, US consul in Liverpool. War Service September 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded the 5th Divn/Army of the Ohio at Shiloh, July 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, Stone's River, Tullahoma, commanded XXI Corps at Chickamauga, criticised by Rosecrans for poor performance but acquitted, resigned December 1864. Brevet Promotions Brig. Gen. U.S.A. March 2 1867. Post War Career State treasurer of Kentucky, 1867 appointed to Regular Army, retired 1881.
