Pre-War Profession Graduated West Point 1839, fought Indians in Florida and Arkansas, garrison duty, Mexican war, frontier duty. War Service May 1861 Col. of 19th US Infantry, commanded Dept of New Mexico, opposed Sibley's invasion, Valverde, March 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, staff duties in the East, May 1864 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded Division of West Mississippi, captured Mobile, accepted the surrender of the forces of Taylor and Kirby Smith in May 1865. Brevet Promotions Brig. Gen. U.S.A. March 13 1865, Maj. Gen. U.S.A. March 13 1865. Post War Career Army service, commanded Dept of the Columbia and Division of the Pacific. Notes Killed while negotiating with Modoc Indians.
