The subject of this notice was the
daughter of Henry Coleman, who was one of the first settlers in the Beaver Dam
valley, much of his old premises being occupied by Beaver Dam town. Here she was
born July 19, 1803 and in 1820 married Isaac Williams, who long since preceded
her to the spirit land and in 1823 removed with her husband to the State of
Illinois, and for many years resided in White Co., but subsequently removed to
Pike county, in the same State, where she committed her spirit to the God who
gave it on the 30th of January , 1881, aged 77 years, 6 months, 11 days. She
leaves in the region where she died a large family of children, grandchildren
and great-grandchildren, who are numbered among the most respectable, wealthy
and prosperous people in that beautiful region of country. Residing in our own
county (Ohio) are her only surviving brothers and sisters, ELISHA H. COLEMAN,
MARTIN COLEMAN, and MRS. WM. R. ADDINGTON. Those three now far advanced in years
and well stricken in age, remain among us, shivering on the brink, waiting the
summons to cross over the river and rest with their numerous kindred who have
gone before. They are the only living representatives of the originally large
family reared in the old patriarch, Henry Coleman, on the Beaver Dam fork of the
Muddy Creek, as it was originally denominated. How fast the old family landmarks
are disappearing, soon the old Coleman’s, like the Miller’s , old Barnes, old
Phipps, old Barnards, Coopers, Maddox’s, Render’s, Austins, Taylors, William’s
and Leaches and other’s who first subdued the dense forests and planted the
standard of civilization and Christianity in that particular region, will live
only in history and their good deeds.

MRS. LYDIA B. STEWART was born JULY 25, 1809 and died at McHenry, Ky April
7, 1881, after a short illness of pneumonia. Mrs. Stewart was the youngest
daughter of Job Malin, one of the oldest pioneers of this county, and was
married to Carter Stewart APRIL 4, 1828. Nearly two score years ago she was left
a widow with 8 children, 4 boys and 4 girls to rear, support and educate.
Unaided by the great influences of wealth, with strong arms, a determined mind
and a brave heart, she assumed the cares and responsibilities that had fallen to
her, she succeeded in raising all her children, and seeing them take their
places as honored and respected men and women in society. That she was a woman
of uncommon force or character is conclusively shown in the success she made in
the battle of life, the brunt of which she had to bear so long unassisted by the
strong arm of her husband. That she was a woman of tender, sympathetic, refined
character, possessing the graces of the true Christian is fully by the high
esteem and respect in which she was held by those who knew her long and well.
That she was a true and found mother was shown by the tender, touching devotion
of her children while living and by the touching grief of the surviving at her
departure. Only two children now survive, one son sleeps in a soldier’s grave,
where he was laid by comrades in arms, three sons and two daughters rest in the
old family burying grounds. The oldest was preceded his mother but a few weeks,
the youngest daughter Mrs. Mary Field, with whom the mother lived was summoned
to join that mother in the Sprit Land in a few brief weeks and now rest in the
same quiet cemetery. Two daughters survive to cherish a fond mother’s memory and
to emulate her noble example. The name of Aunt Lydia Stewart is associated with
many recollections of this writer, from the fact that he was reared from
childhood to manhood on the farm formerly owned and occupied by her, and he
writes this brief tribute to her memory, as an expression of his high
appreciation of her character and his tender regard for the survivors of this
family.
