Darius L. Vigus married Susan N. Garrett August 2, 1832, and moved into his attractive new home here on "Constitution Street."

Thomas K. Layton (who built the house in 1831) and wife, Amanda, sold it to him and removed across the street. The 1838 Directory lists "Thos. K. Layton, brick-maker and layer, r.s. Constitution between N. Mulberry and Walnut Sts." The directory abbreviation "r.s." meant "right side," which was the south side east and north side west of Upper St. By the same token--Main and Upper Streets being the directional center--the "r.s." meant the east side north of Main Street and the west side south of Main Street.

Layton bought the lot here--50 feet by 100 feet "back to Pine Alley"--February 9, 1831.

Vigus died in 1844, leaving his widow and two daughters. Benjamin Gratz and Henry Bell witnessed his will. The Twentieth Century had arrived when Vigus' heirs sold the house to the present owners.
