"Elizabeth Barry, l.s. S. Upper St. bet. high and Maxwell," (1838 Directory) purchased a lot here in January, 1834, and either built or occupied a house that was standing on the lot. The deed was from Wm. Satterwhite's heirs; Mrs. Martha Satterwhite was living on "Upper St." in 1818, and Wm. Satterwhite bought the lot in 1811 from Samuel Long, the builder. The consideration, however, does not indicate that this brick house was here until after Mrs. Barry disposed of it.
(Mrs. Barry issued a power of attorney to her son-in-law, Charles Gibson, in 1835, to look after her interests as one of the heirs of John L. Taylor - revoked two years later.)
Elihu Hogan purchased the property in 1841 from Mrs. Barry, and when he sold it, "now occupied by him as a residence," in January 1858, to Overton P. Hogan, of Grant County, there was no doubt about the present building being here.
The house was conveyed by Hogan to Jacob Embry in October, 1860. Sarah F. Morton was awarded the house in 1864, allotted to her as one of the heirs of Embry.
Sarah Morton's heirs sold the property in 1901 to Geo. C. Webb. and J.R. Morton.
