George Washington Cox was born 29 October 1830 in West Liberty, Kentucky, the son of William and Cynthia Reid Cox, and the grandson of John and Judith Sexton Cox.
During the Civil War, George served in the Confederate States Army as a Lieutenant in Company 15, Kentucky Mounted Infantry.
After the war, on 7 August 1867 in Wolfe County, Kentucky, he married Martha Jane (Mattie) Hanks, the daughter of Cuthbert Million (Cud) and Millie Ann Garrett Hanks, and the granddaughter of Fielding and Lydia Harper Hanks.
George and Mattie were the parents of Emma Jane, Millie Ann, Cyntha C., Zerilda E., Willie Cud, Nannie, Johnnie and Kelly Cox.
George Washington Cox died 28 September 1891 and is buried at Cox's Mill Cemetery in Wolfe County.
