OBITUARY: Whisman, Freddy L. - September 10, 1988 Lexington Herald-Leader - September 12, 1988 Submitted by: chilipepper5454@aol.com ********************************************************************* Deceased Name: WOLFE COUNTY MAN DIES AS DUNE BUGGY CRASHES A traffic accident involving alcohol killed a Wolfe County man and injured another Saturday night in Campton, state police at Morehead said. Freddy L. Whisman, 18, of Campton, died of head injuries when the dune buggy in which he was riding collided with a car at Washington and Drake streets, Wolfe County Coroner Frank Porter said. Police said the dune buggy, eastbound on Drake Street, went through a stop sign and collided with a northbound car. Whisman was thrown from the dune buggy. He was dead at the scene. The accident occurred at 7:40 p.m. Saturday. The driver of the dune buggy, Wilgus Roberts, 18, of Campton, was not injured. He was charged with drunken driving, driving without registration and driving without insurance, police said. Another passenger in the dune buggy, Steve Banks, 20, of Campton, sustained head and shoulder injuries and was taken to the Middle Kentucky River Medical Center in Jackson. He was dismissed yesterday, a hospital spokeswoman said. The driver of the car, Phillip E. Nickel, 20, of Campton, was not injured. He was charged with driving with a suspended license and driving without insurance. Nickel was not wearing a seat belt, and police did not know if the people in the dune buggy were wearing helmets. Whisman is survived by his parents, Lester Eugene and Carol Whisman; two brothers, Linville Eugene Whisman, of Hendersonville, N.C., and John D. Whisman; four sisters, Kimberly Trent and Marie Windon, both of Atlanta, and Tokie Whisman and Peggy Whisman, both of Campton; and maternal grandmother, Ethel Beechcraft of Middletown, Ohio. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Shackelford Funeral Home, Campton. Visitation will be after noon today.
