OBITUARY: Spencer, Elijah - Thursday, May 8, 2008 Submitted by Gruetzmacher Funeral Home in Suring, WI Submitted by: Kerry Bailey ********************************************************************* Spencer, Elijah Elijah Spencer, 108, Oconto Falls, passed away early Thursday morning, May 8, 2008, at Sharpe Care, Oconto Falls, with his family by his side. He was born March 12, 1900, in Campton, Ky., to the late Thomas and Georgella (Roberts) Spencer. After meeting his sweetheart at a train station, Elijah soon married Esther Cable on Nov. 18, 1927, in Campton, Ky. Shortly after, they moved to Laona, Wis., where they raised their eight children. During that time Elijah was employed at Connor Lumber. After 23 years, they moved to Suring, where he farmed and became a Cattle Dealer. Some of Elijahs interests included attending auction sales, reminiscing about Kentucky, gardening, and spending time with his large family who meant the world to him. He attributes his long life to hard work. He has always said "Laugh A Lot, Pray A Lot, and Trust In The Lord." Elijah is survived by two daughters, Dolly (Ed) Yashinsky, Spruce; Jean Forrest, Mountain; a son, Glen Spencer, Kenosha; three daughters-in- law, Evelyn Spencer, Milwaukee; Karen Spencer, Suring; Marilyn Spencer, Franklin; a son-in-law, Leo Sippola, Milwaukee; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren, 12 great- great-grandchildren; a half-sister, Liza Brewer, Hazard Ky. He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Esther in 1994 after 66 years of marriage; four sons, Slim, Jack, Jim, Tom; a daughter, Mary Ellen Sippola; three daughters-in-law, Alice, Anita, and Rose Spencer; a son-in- law, Les Forrest; a great-grandson, Jacob Marks; a brother, Claude Spencer; nine brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Minnie and Hiram Spencer, Addie and Wade Drake, Virgie and Johnny Kauzrich, Elizabeth Barney, Mary and Carrie Spencer. Visitation will be held at Gruetzmacher Funeral Home, Monday, May 12, 2008, from 9 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Paul Beighley officiating. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Crandon, on Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at 11a.m. The family would like to thank Sharpe Care for their wonderful care and love they gave Elijah over the past 4 years. There are no words to express our gratefulness. As Grandpa would say "It was the best 5 Star Hotel he has ever stayed at."
