OBITUARY: Abner, Doll Drake - September 7, 1988 Lexington Herald-Leader - September 10, 1988 Submitted by: chilipepper5454@aol.com ********************************************************************* Deceased Name: FORMER SCHOOLTEACHER DOLL DRAKE ABNER DIES Doll Drake Abner, who could trace her ancestry to English explorer Sir Francis Drake, died Wednesday at her home in Vada in Lee County. She was 95. Mrs. Abner had taught school in Wolfe and Lee counties and also served 12 years on the Lee County Board of Education. She was postmistress at Vada for several years. In recent years she operated a farm in the historic Greys Bend section of Lee County, where she did much of the work herself. An expert gardener, Mrs. Abner's farm and garden exhibits often took first place at county agriculture fairs. Mrs. Abner was the widow of John Henry Abner. She is survived by two sons, former Lee County Sheriff Arthur Von Abner of Beattyville and Nola Thomas Abner of Morganton, N.C.; two daughters, Rae Barnes of Clermont, Fla., and Mila Vern Abner of Vada; a brother, Dudley Drake of Beattyville; three sisters, Sallie Abner of Winchester, Letha Creech of Folerville, Mich., and Cindy Feltner of Hazard; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Union Church of Christ, Vada. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of services at the church. Shackelford Funeral Home, Campton, is in charge of arrangements.
