Obituary: Lewis, Bruce - Saturday, March 11, 1916 The Jackson Times - March 17, 1916 Submitted by: Carole Bays ************************************************************************** MARK UP ANOTHER FOR WOLFE Without knowing just what provocation or who brought on the trouble, The Times has here to record another killing in our neighboring county of Wolfe. At Lee City, last Saturday night about dark, Bruce Lewis, merchant, was instantly killed by one Leck Montgomery. Lewis having his head almost severed from his body by a knife in the hands of Montgomery. The best information that The Times can gather is that Leck Montgomery, in company with Harry Fallen and Scorcher Montgomery, went into Lewis' store and Fallen raised a fuss, or at least, was participant in a trouble with Bruce Lewis, the latter being under the influence of liquor. Ed Lewis, a brother of Bruce took Fallen out of the store, and Bruce also went outside, Ed Lewis returning to the store and then Fallen took hold of Lewis. About this time John Shockey came up and shoved Fallen and Bruce apart, Bruce falling down, due, perhaps to his intoxication, and, as he was getting up Leck Montgomery came up from behind him, as we learn it, and , taking hold of Bruce's chin, pulled his head back and, with a knife cut his throat, as said before, almost cutting off his head. Scorcher Montgomery and Harry Fallen have been arrested, but Leck, who did the cutting, got away. It is an awful story and we give the bare facts as they were told to us. Bruce Lewis would drink, but had not the reputation of a bad man. He was a son-in-law of Clay Rose, of Lee City, and a brother-in-law to Clarence Pratt, a good business man of South Jackson, and a partner of Walker Taulbee. ******************************************************************** These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by any other organization or persons.
