Obituary: Nannie Bailey Whisman, Jackson Times May 13, 1937 Nov. 15, 2003 Submitted by: http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/vols/00001.html#0000062 Wolfe County Genealogy and Carole Bays ********************************************************************** Mrs. Whisman Dies after Long Illness Mrs. Nannie Bailey Whisman, 80, died early Friday morning May 7, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Terry, from a heart attack which followed a long illness. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, May 9, interment following in the family cemetery near Fincastle in Wolfe County. Mrs. Whisman was the daughter of the late Minter and Louise Bailey. She was born in Lee County, Virginia, Oct. 15, 1856. Her parents moved to Wolfe County near Campton, where she was very young where she lived until her marriage to Michael S. Whisman of Fincastle. Ten children were born to them seven of whom survive. Her husband preceded her to the grave several years ago. During the past several years, Mrs. Whisman has lived in Middletown, O. More than four years ago Mrs. Whisman suffered a paralytic stroke and had been an invalid since that time. Six weeks prior to her death, she came to Jackson for a visit with her daughter, Mrs. Terry, where she was stricken and died at five o'clock Friday morning. A short service was conducted at the family residence at eight o'clock Sunday morning, and the body taken in the Ray & Black ambulance to Wolfe County where funeral services and interment followed in the family lot near the old homestead. Surviving are two sons, Arthur Whisman of Indianapolis, Ind., and Ray of Fincastle; five daughters, Mrs. Charles Terry of this city; Mrs. John Poland, Bridgeport, Ind.; Mrs. T.S. Shackelford, Fincastle; Mrs. Frank Nelson, Dayton, Ohio; and Mrs. Minnie Mathews, Middletown, O. Eighteen grandchildren and one great grandchild, Mary Ellen Terry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer J. Terry of this city, also survives, and one sister, Mrs. S.B. Smith, Campton, KY. Mrs. Whisman was well known throughout this section of the state and related to many families in Lee, Wolfe and Breathitt counties. Although an invalid, for several years, she maintained an unusually alert mind until her death, and was loved by all who knew her.
