He was married to Laura Alice Jones in 1884 and to this union were born five children; Nevada, Dennis, Clay, Frances and Golden. He was graduated from Louisville Medical school in 1894. Immediately after his graduation from School he went to Hazel Green to practive. Mrs. Laura Nickell died in 1908 and in later years he was married to Rosa James. Dr. Nickell died at 11:00 a.m. April 27, 1946, after a prolonged illness at the age of 83. Rev. Harlan Murphy of Lexington officiated at the funeral which was attended by many citizens of Wolfe County and the adjoining counties as well as friends and relatives from other states. Active Pallbearers: Scott McClure, Dorsey Rose, Franklin Walter, Rodney Gillespie, Bev. Buchanan and Sam Cecil. Honorary Pallbearers: Rev. Boone Center, John R. Rose, Robert Miller, R.B. McLin, Asbury James, and Wes Taulbee, all of Hazel Green. Dr. Nickel; was the last child of a family of eight children; Seebern and Kelse, Monroe, Elizabeth, Frances, Andrew, Grant, and John Nickell. Three of his four surviving children were present for the funeral. Mr. Dennis C. Nickell, Mrs. Grover C. Chambers and Mrs. Bert Hughes. Due to illness of Mrs. Butler Hughes could not attend. Oct. 1874, age 25, KyKyKy Norma njadams@cinci.rr.com ************************************* Wolfe County News, May 3, 1946 WOLFE'S OLDEST DR., DR. ANDY C. NICKELL, DIES AT HAZEL GREEN Dr. Andy C. Nickell, 83 who has practiced medicine in Wolfe county for the past 51 years, died at his home in Hazel Green at noon, Saturday, April 27. He had been in very poor health for about a year and was confined to his bed all winter. Dr. Nickell was a native of Morgan county. He was always a friend to the poor, giving away hundreds of dollars in fees and medicine during his half century of practice. He was the oldest practicing physician in the section and was a graduate of the Louisville School of Medicine in 1884. He outlived his classmates. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Rosie B. Nickell, a son, Major D. C. Nickell, Council Bluffs, Iowa: and three daughters, Mrs. Butler Hughes, Middletown, Ohio; Mrs. C.C. Chambers and Mrs. Bert Hughes of Dayton, Ohio; a number of relatives.
