Obits: Whisman, Maynard , died August 1951 Oct. 2002 Wolfe County, KY Submitted by: http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/vols/00001.html#0000062 Wolfe County Genealogy and Carole Bays ********************************************************************** Wolfe County News, Aug. 8, 1951 WOLFE MAN SHOT TO DEATH HERE; OTIS NICKELLS HELD IN SLAYING A Wolfe County man was shot fatally about 2 p.m. Saturday in the Campton courthouse yard here after an argument with another man which officers said had no connection with the state primary election held that day. Maynard Whisman, 40 Pine Ridge, died in an ambulance en route to a Winchester hospital. A pistol bullet entered his abdomen and emerged from his back. County and state officers arrested Otis Nickell, about 45 within a few minutess following the shooting and charged him with the slaying. He was placed in the Wolfe County jail to await examining trial. The victim's daughter, Beulah Whisman, about 16 told officers she witnessed the shooting and named Nickells as the slayer. The girl said Nickells attempted to stop a truck in which she and her father were riding before they arrived in Campton Saturday. Whisman's daughter added that Nickells followed the truck until her father stopped the vehicle near the courthouse. Both men moved to the courthouse lawn after getting out of their vehicles and argued for several minutes. The body was taken to the Hearne Funeral Home at Stanton and was brought to the deceased man's home Sunday morning. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Campton Baptist church by the Rev. Shirl Davidson. Interment followed in the Evans Cemetery near here. Surviving, besides the daughter who witnessed the shooting, are his wife, Mrs. Carrie Whisman, his father, John Whisman, Franklin, Ohio, one other daughter, Mary Ivola Whisman, at home, one son, Gary Whisman, two sisters, Mrs. Eunice Epperson, Winchester, and Mrs. Mina Ratliff, Middletown, O.; four half-sisters, Mrs. Ruby Venters, Sandy Ridge; Mrs. Irene Brown, Franklin, Ohio, and Miss Roberta Whisman and Miss Arbutus Whisman, Franklin, Ohio; and two half-brothers, Kenneth Whisman, Franklin, Ohio, and Carlton Whisman, Sandy Ridge. Examining trial for Nickells was originally set for Tuesday morning, but was postponed until Thursday morning, court officals said.
