Obits: Allen, Charles, died July 1951 Oct. 2002 Wolfe County, KY Submitted by: http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/vols/00001.html#0000062 Wolfe County Genealogy and Carole Bays **********************************************************************Wolfe County News, Feb. 4, 1949 Wolfe County News July 18, 1951 LAST RITES HELD AT JACKSON FOR CHARLES ALLEN Funeral services for Charles Allen, 23 were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, at the First Christian Church, Jackson, conducted by the Rev. Nash pastor of the Beattyville Christian Church. Burial was at Stillwater in Wolfe County. Young Allen, an employee of the Pennington Funeral Home at Beattyville, was shot about 8:30 Friday night in a roadhouse near Hazard. Perry county officers said they arrested Ray Thomas of Perry county shortly after the shooting and placed him in jail at Hazard. Thomas was arrested on a charge of shooting and wounding, however that charge was revised following the death of Allen some nine hours later at a Hazard hospital. Allen, son of Grover Cleveland Allen, widely known Jackson attorney and a Democratic candidate for Circuit Judge of the 39th Judical District was shot one time. The bullet went through the left shoulder and penetrated to his spine. He never regained consciousness. It was reported that the two men had never had any known trouble and accounts of the shooting vary to a large degree. The deceased had worked at the Pennington funeral Home since the first of the year, following his graduation from an Embalming College at Cincinnati. Several weeks later, he and his family, took up residence at Beattyville. He was a member of the Jackson Christian Chruch and of American Legion Post No.84 at Beattyville. Allen had served with the U.S. Army both here and overseas. He was a quiet, reassuring type of man and made friends easily and quickly. Although having lived in Lee County only a comparatively short while, his many friends there as well as Breathitt and surrounding counties were shocked and saddened to learn of his death. Survivors include his father and mother; his wife, Mrs. Ann Gum Allen; a two-year-old daughter, Donna Allen; three sisters and six brothers. Ray and Blake Funeral Home of Jackson had charge of arrangements. ************************************************************************* USGENWEB ARCHIVES NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by any other organization or persons.
