Obits: Moore, Hannah, died 05/21/1948 Oct. 2002 Wolfe County, KY Submitted by: http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/vols/00001.html#0000062 Wolfe County Genealogy and Carole Bays ********************************************************************** Wolfe County News, May 28, 1948 AUNT HANNAH MOORE DIES AT PINE RIDGE MONDAY EVENING "Aunt" Hannah Moore, 89, whose childhood as an orphan taught her lessons of charity and human kindness which she spent her lifetime putting into practice and gained the love of hundreds of people in this county died quietly Monday, May 21. In ill health for several months, she had been making her home with Mr. and Mrs. Finley Hanks at Pine Ridge where she died about 5:30 in the afternoon. Aunt Hannah, as she was affectionately known in the community was born in 1859 on Hiram's Branch. Orphaned, with a sister and brother, at the age of eight, she lived fo a number of years with an uncle on the Kentucky River. The other children were taken to the home of another uncle in Indiana. By the time she was 16, she was earning her own living, doing housework for 50 cents a weeks or hoeing corn for 25 cents a day. Later she moved to Campton to tend house for a couple who operated a store there, receiving $2 per week in wages. By frugality, she saved enough money to purchase a small house and lot here, in which she made her home. Later an oil company leased a portion of her lot to erect some buildings, including a four room dwelling, and later she moved to this house, renting the larger one she had occupied. Into her home came many young people, some seeking a home while they secured an education, and to these youths she was both friend and councilor. Many elderly ladies found refuge in her home rather than spending the evening of their lives in an institution. It was her concern for others and her constant devotion to her Campton Methodist Church which made her life outstanding in the community. In 1942, the brother, of whom she had not heard since a child, died in California and left her a legacy of almost $7,000. A portion of this she donated toward the erection of a new building to house the church she had loved and served for 60 years. Her property, she had told friends, would go to the church at her death. Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church at 2:00 Tuesday afaternoon by the pastor, Rev. J.H. Lewis. Interment followed in the Evans Cemetery at the edge of town. Two requests concerning her funeral - 1. that her body not be embalmed. 2. that no flowers be sent in tribute save those grown in the yards of her friends - were carried out. ************************************************************************* USGENWEB ARCHIVES NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by any other organization or persons.
