Obituary: Henry, Vergie (Sample) - Thursday, January 15, 2009 Published in The Middletown Journal on 1/17/2009 Submitted by: Carole Bays ********************************************************************** HENRY, Vergie Sample Wolfe County, KY native and long time Pine Ridge Postmaster, passed away on January 15 in Hospice of Cincinnati, Ohio. Vergie was born in Wolfe County in the Laurel/Trent community on Friday, June 13, 1913. She is survived by one daughter, Frances H. (Joe) Suesz, two sons, John O. (Addie) Henry, Bill (Helen) Henry, 12 Grandchildren, 22 Great Grandchildren, one great great granddaughter, and 15 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Orville Henry, one daughter Mary Sue Hood, 4 sisters and I brother. Vergie was the daughter of the late George F. and Nancy Brown Sample. She graduated from Alvin Drew High School in 1932, continued her education at the old Bryan Stratton Business School in Louisville, and married Orville (Buster) Henry in 1937. Buster passed away in 1976. Vergie served as the Pine Ridge Postmaster for 32 years. She has held many offices in Kentucky Methodism - for years at Pine Ridge Methodist Church, later at Campton United Methodist, and later in Berea being a United Methodist Woman for 70 years. She also served on the Board of Directors of Dessie Scott Childrens Home in Pine Ridge for several years. She was instrumental in organizing the Alvin Drew Alumni Association in which she is obviously a charter member. Vergie has been a significant presence in the volunteer community. Always youthful, attractive and physically active, she has done many Crop Walks and fund raisers. She chauffeured any and all friends as needed for years. Her angel food cakes are the envy of serious cooks. The family suggests that Memorials may be made to The Paul Fugate Scholarship Fund, Wolfe County Soil Conservation Service, Box 235, Campton, KY 41301. (Make checks payable to Peggy Fugate), or to the charity of your choice. Funeral services will be Monday, Jan. 19, 11 A.M. at the Campton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Doughton and Rev. Bill Henry officiating. Visitation for Vergie will be at Porter and Son Funeral Directors in Campton, Sunday from 4 - 8 PM and after 10 AM Monday at the church.
