:It is estimated that the intoxicating liquor used annually in the United States would fill a canal four foot deep and fourteen feet wide and one hundred and twenty miles long. The liquor saloons in New York alone, placed in opposite rows would make a street eleven miles in length, while those the United States would make a double row one hundred miles long. If the victims were congregated on this liquor Broadway, we would see a suicide every mile, and a thousand funerals every day; If all the drunkards were drawn up in Battle array, in two ranks, they would form a line two hundred and twenty-five miles long." What an array of victims? Every hour in the night the Heavens are lighted up with the torch of the drunken incendiary. Every hour of the day the earth is reddened with blood spilt by the drunken assassin. This great army is in motion; detachments are constantly filing off to the poorhouse, the prison, the scaffold, and the drunkard's graveyard, and these places are constantly filled by recruits drawn from the Camp of Instruction -- The Moderate Drinker. Who can compute the fortunes squandered, the hopes crushed, the homes made desolate, the hearts broken, by intemperance?

A Kentucky paper put it this way: "Whiskey is the cause of nearly all crime, disorder and misery. Strike it out, and strikes will end; tramp it out and tramps will be few; murder it, and murders will cease; stab it to the heart, and hearts will no be stabbed; put an everlasting end to the meanthing, and meanness will be the exception, instead of the rule. Set fire to it - burn the last barrel and bottle, and fewer souls will burn in hell.

An honest man is the work of God? a drunkard is the work of the dramseller. Is he proud of his work? Why not make a model of a complete specimen of the rumsellers works? Put it in a glass case, exhibit in the drinking saloon, and write over it. "A Specimen of My Work - I Am Proud of it!"

Upon what does the success of liquor trafic depend? Upon debased manhood, wronged womanhood, defrauded childhood. It holds a mortgage over every cradel, a deed written in hearts blood over every lifel. Shall mothers know this and be silent? Shall fathers understand and be indifferent? Yea: Shall the voters of Butler district be silent, and not vote against this monster evil, on first Monday in August? We think not. Let the voters of this district calmly and prayerfully condiser this important questions?

A newspaper ordinarily represents the value of 5 cents. And the man who enters a newspaper office and says "gimme a paper" can with equal propriety meet the newspaper man and say, "gimme a nickel." The principle is just the same, and, but for the public disgrace attached to it. the newspaper dead beat would become a street beggar if he thought he could increase his income a few dimes every day. - Sentinel-Democrat.
