-
Isaac Garred - b. abt. 1789; owner David Garred;
according to family lore, Isaac was emanumated by David Garred shortly
before his death [Dec. 14, 1839]. "Isaac remained at the Garred House and
tanned leather. He kept David Garred's sons Ulysees and David W. supplied
with leather and had enough stored up that it lasted for many years after
his death. His tan yard was on David W. Garred's land and consisted of the
site where the barn and barn lot of L. A. Garred [in 1957] now stands. The
last of his tan bark mill was sold for scrap during WWII by L. A. Garred.
Isaac was buried at the Garred grave yard in the bottom immediately upstream
from the stone house". (*5)
Yet, the Lawrence Co. Slave Census suggests
that Isaac was still a slave in 1850, listed as one black male, age 60,
owner Jane Garred. It is possible that it was Jane Garred who emanumated
Isaac shortly before her death [1854]. Isaac, about 65 years old, is
mentioned in Heirs vs. Garred's or Jarret's Heirs (*6). According to the
document, which did not list a monetary value for Isaac, he was allowed to
choose his home in 1854 after Jane Garred's death. He went to live with
William and Nancy (Garred) Ratliff in Wayne Co. VA.
