• West Owenton School #10 - late 1890s This Owen County one-room school house, one of many, had to be in the West Owenton district and was likely the one about a mile up South Fork road from the Gratz pike (US 22) and off on Kemper Lane. Some students are known and listed in the close-up photos. Can you help with the rest? There should be Yanceys, Kempers, Thorntons, Duvalls, Meffords, Lusbys, Gibsons, etc, included here just to mention a few area families. LEFT: (fourth row) 1st left unk, Beebe Hancock, John Hancock, behind John's shoulder, his sister, Callie Hancock (m. Clarence Morgan). All others unknown. Bill Arand identifies the boy standing farthest to the left (3rd row) as Tom Thornton. CENTER: The uppermost male is Elliott Cropper, then on a straight line from Elliott angled 45 degrees right, the lady in the white blouse is unknown, the next girl in dark dress is Elliott's sister, Nellie Cropper, on the same line in front of Nellie is her younger brother, Lindsay Cropper. Lindsay had a fraternal twin, Luke, who should be here but has never been identified. The rest are unknown. Of the five faces on the left, top to bottom, Bill Arand identifies the young man in the middle as George Thornton. RIGHT:None identfied. Bill Arand identifies the young lady in the rear just right of the building, who is standing arms linked to a girl in similar dress, as Hattie Thornton. (as Archived at Wayback Machine)
