School Stories


Briarfield School


This school opened during the last half of the 19th century, started 
as a church and school. Part of the land on which it stood was owned 
by Tom WATKINS. Emmitt GARRISON gave more land abt 1935. The first 
school was a mlog house. School closed prior to 1946. Trustees 
1896-1903 were:

Jones, J. Mayhew, J. R. Hornbuckle, J. D. Berry, L M Garrison, J O

Buck Creek School


Buck Creek School was located in southern Allen Co, abt 100 yads 
off the New Buck Creek Road. It was on a wagon road which joined 
the Old and New Buck Creek Roads. Trustees were: D S Harris, J B 
Hinton and M M Lyles. Claudius Harris was the teacher 1928-29 and 
1929-30. The school closed in 1934-35 term. Teachers included also: 
George McReynolds, Joel F Pitchford, Eddie Lyles, Hattie Foster,
Roy Hinton, Toy Hinton, Joan Devasher, Hattie Leo McMillan, Ennis 
Lamb, Aubrey Lamb, Claudius Harris, Mae McReynolds, William

Cedar Hill School (Log Pile)


The land for this school was donated by William HARSTON, located 4 miles NE
of Scottsville on the Old Glasgow Road and one mile from the Cedar Hill
Road. From 1892-1900 the school was known as Log Pile. Teachers

Chestun Point & Cliburn School


Chestnut Point was built around 1900, 4 miles east of Scottsville on the
 north side of the Mayesville Road near Chestnut Point Church on land

 Cliburn School is one of the oldest in the county, was located near Carpenter's 
Mill on Long Creek. It started in1830 and many of the children who lived on the 
west side of Long Creek attended there. They included CALVERT, CARPENTER, CLIBURN, 
FISHBURN, HOLDER, PITCHFORD, SHAW and STINSON families. Catherine Ann BROWEN 
(Kitty CLIBURN) was a teacher for over 40 yeas. During the Civil War, the school 
was moved about a mile up the road near where Mt Gilead Church now stands. It 
closed in 1890.

Clifton School


2 sites for this church - the first a log cabin and in the hollow below the
Clifton General Baptist Church abt 100 yards from the spring. The church
had organied in 1878. Abt 1897-1898 a frame structure was erected by S L
HERMAN. Due to the discovery of oil here and the strong smell, was moved to
the top ofthe hill not far from the chruch. School closed in 1948 and all
the pupils transferred to Meador. Some teachers included: Myrtie OSBORNE

Crane Hill School


A new school district was created in 1922 from out of the Harrison district
- the new school was known as Crane Hill School #99. R D HOOTEN and M W
NAPIER were hired to build the building. Andrew WILLOUGHBY donated the
land. This school burned in 1952. Teachers there included: Omaleah GRAVES,
N S SHAW, Mamie SPECK, Myrtie OSBORNEERWIN, Mautie WILLOUGHBY REYNOLDS,
Clara WILLOUGHBY, Clara Helen REYNOLDS JONES, Leiron Neal ALLEN, Viola
WAGNER, Pauline RICHEY, Catherine SIMMONS and Ella STONE GATEWOOD. Mautie
above was the first teacher and her daughter Clara Helen was the last.

Durham's Spring School


Durham's Spring School built ca 1853 on land deeded by Frank GRAHAM. Early

Ebenezer School


Ebenezer School was the earliest school in the district and Hiram DINWIDDIE
 donated the land. It was located one mile north of Harris School. Land was
 donated for Harris by Robert David HARRIS before the 1870's. Tom and
 Adeline NEWLAN lived near the school and Adeline tookcare of all the
 injuries of the children while Tom judged debates, umpired games and other
 helpful tasks. Early trustees were R C DINWIDDIE, T F LYLES, T L NEWMAN, T
 P NEWMAN, E D LAMB, Lon HARRIS and S W HARRIS. Teachers included: J Z

Edgefield School


Edgefield School resulted from a deed in 1910 between A W 
WORSHAM and James WILSON, trustee of the new school. The 
school was located 1/2 miles fromScottsville on the east 
side of Holland School. It burned in 1925 and the school 
finished that year in a private residence of Ike FITZPATRICK. 
In 1926, Edgefield and Pleasant Hill Districts were combined 
and a school built on land owned by Frank JOHNSON. The new 
name was Pleasant Field. Teachers included: Alford DALTON, 
Linus P NAPIER, Ernest LYLES, E C COLE, Elbert COOK, Herbert 
DOUGLAS, J J ALEXANDER, Ethel WILSON, Bruce MORRISON, W H 
DUNCAN, C H EASTER and Virgie LLOYD. Early trustees included

Flatwoods School


Flat Woods School was located on the farm of Lucile CELSOR; a 
new school was built by Jefferson CELSOR in 1916. South side 
Hwy 100, 5 miles east of Holland. Trustees from 1896-1909 were: 
F W SHOCKLEY, Simon GENTRY, W H HUGHES, W J CELSOR, T A GRAY, 
A D DOWNING, J N HUGHES and J D DOWNING. J W PROFFITT was a 
teacher pre 1909. Other known teachers. included: Irene CELSOR, 
Andy WHITNEY, Blanche SEAY, Mont HUGHES, Nina May HUGHES PARDUE, 
Ray PARDUE, Lizzie HUGHES READ, Ruth WHITNEY BEWLEY DOWNING, 
Floyd WALDEN and Gene GARRISON. The school closed in 1957 and 
students then attended Mt. Zion.

Gainesville - abt 7miles north of Scottsville, off 101 North. Jeremiah

Half Way School


This school was on the first floor with a Masonic lodge on the 2nd floor,
built around the turn of the centurey. When other schools closed, this
school increased in attendance. J F RICHARDS gave land in 1940 for the
school and the old school was sold to the lodge. Early trustees included G

Heath School


In 1884 Susan DAVIS gave land for building a school which was called Heath.
It was in southern Allen Co on the Jenner BLANKENSHIP Road near Trammel
Creek. Early trustees included: J M SMITH, R H HOLLEY, W B FOSTER, J M
DENNIS, Chen HOUSE, S D HEATH, G W FOLLIS, Dr R W COOK, J B CONNYER, M C
HOUSE and Alonzo FOLLIS.

Was located in eastern part of the county, left of Hwy 98 near the WHITNEY
farm - land donated by the DEVASHER family. Trustees from 1896 thru 1903

Harrison School (Welch farm)


The oldest Harrison school was on the Jack WELCH farm, left of Hwy 101
north on highway 1332. It was also used as a church by Rev. Tobias HAM, son
of Mordecai F HAM S. Tobias was the father of Mordecai F HAM, Jr under
whose ministry Billy GRAHAM was converted. The district was later divided
and 2 new schools were built - one named Crane Hill and the other Harrison.
The newer Harrison school was on Hwy 101 north on the hill left of the
Harrison School Road. It closed, with consolidation in 1958. Teachers are
the old school were: Lily HOOD SEARS, Lila Downing, D A OLIVER, Nellie
WELSH, Rona BROWN and Harry READ. Teachers at the newer school included
Estel EKLES, Lola OSBORNE WEAVER, Mattie POPE, George TINSLEY, Zelma
OSBORNE ERWIN, Jeanette STOVALL WHITLOW, Mary WALKER, Mae Belle OLIVER,

Highland School


Opened in the late 1870's or 1880 on land donated by Jim Ike MOORE.
Revivals for the Mt Union Association of General Baptists show revivals
being held here in 1895 and 1896. Early trustees were: P H BUTRUM, W J LAW,
S A CROWDER, Henry FARLEY and Sam LAW. Teachers included Bessie CROWDER, Dr

Jefferson School


   Jefferson School was located near Big Difficult Creek in the northern part
 of the county - the oldest school in Allen Co. John PULLIAM sold land for 
the school site, it was originally to be a private school. The school
continued until the 1946-47 school year end. Known teachers were: Lucy
MOREHEAD, Nannie MOREHEAD, Francis WHITNEY, Noka HOOD, Callie RICKMAN, Will
YORK, Forest GUY, Pernie Taylor BUCHANON, Floy TERRILL, J E HARSTON, Eurie

located south of Hwy 100 east not too far from Dry Creek. Other trustees

The Madison School was located on Rough Creek Church Road in southcentral Allen Co. 
It was first known as Sabbath or the Spelling School. It ran through the 1840's thru the 1880's.

Maple Grove School


Maple Grove's beginning date is unknown but was around 1885-1890 because of
the burning of the deed book from that time frame (book E). R B EVANS was
known to have donated the land. The first recorded trustees were: I T

WAGONER, G RKEEN, W V WAGONER and Ida MEADOR. Other teachers included:

Meador High School


This school was located 1/4 mile from the MEADOR Store on the current Hwy
101 North. The community center is now located there. Original land was
 donated in 1922 by the Trigg MOORE's. School began before the school
building was completed in a tenant house on the Will TABOR farm in Aug of
1923. Mary Alan LANDRUM was the teacher there. First year students were:

Old Middle Fork School


Old Middle Fork School was on land donated by WIlliam DODSON, no one is
 able to determine the opening date. Early trustees included Thomas DUCKETT,
 P A GARRISON, S H RUSH, E E DAVIS and Marshall DUCKETT. Teachers included
 Miss Emma LEWIS, R H GARRISON & Alvin MOORE. It was united with another
 school in 1904 and became Harmony School. It was located off Pope Harmony
 Road near Harmony Church in the western part of the county.

Mount Victory School


Mt Victory school was located in the Trammel communty on the Trammel Road. It was
founded in 1919 as a grade school by combining White Oak and Beech Grove.
It became a Junior High School in 1922, Professor A H Hill was the first
teacher. It became a Senior High School in 194.The board of education
members at that time were Will TABOR, N R COLE, L M STONE,W A PERRY and W F

Mt. Zion School (part 1)


According to Norman Warnell's Pioneer Baptist Church Records of South
Central Kentucky and the Upper Cumberland, there was a Mt. Zion Church in
1850 which dissolved in 1868 and reorganized in 1888. According to various
records there was a school here also at an early date. The school was
located off Hwy 98 (Bob Tracy Road). Trustees from 1896-1902 included: Joe
SIDDENS, J C HUDSON, H L PURSLEY, Ben DOWNING, Jr, T L PARRISH, F M LANE, T
E OLIVER, Dee SIDDENS, George SMALLING, E G WILSON and teachers at the same
time were H G HUDSON, R T HOLLAND, & R M BROWN. Later trustees were B M
PARRISH and Miller DOWNING.

Teachers during 1906-1918 included Polka HOUSER, Bessie MANSFIELD, N S
SHAW, Will JOHNSON, Emma GUY CROMWELL, Oscar GUY, Linus NAPIER, Maggie
SMALLING, Bessie CROWDER JOHNSON and Nannie DIXON. The 1928 graduating
class included: Nell DOWNING BARTON, Willie HUDSON LAW, Ella SIDDENS
WOODWARD, Ina LEWIS WILSON, James JOHNSON and Winfred HUDSON. There is much

Mulberry Hill & Middle Fork School

Mulberry Hill was in the Halfway community. Rev. BONNER preached here and
shortly thereafter a church and school was organized in 1864. Early school
trustees included W H JOHNSON, J V BELLER, J W WATKINS, Y R PRUITT, W D
SPENCER, W H HENDRICKS, W E OLIVER, WOOD PRUITT & B S AYERS (1896-1899).
J Y JONES was an early teacher. It merged with Halfway School. A class photo

New Roe School


New Roe was located on Drake's Creek and originally consisted of 3 families
- ANTHONY, HARRELL and CHANEY. They named the area New Roe meaning small
deer and after an old VA town called Roe. 

The deed establishing the school here was written in 1912. Early trustees

Petroleum School (part 1)


Continuining our look at the old schools in Allen Co; Petroleum School was
 built in 1935 to serve the Petroleum community of the county. H N FRAIM was
 the first principal; Mrs B O HINTON and Lula DALTON were the first
 teachers. Buck Creek and Taylor Schools were incorporated into this school
 along with their teachers, Nadine Marion DAVIS and Claudius HARRIS. The
 high school operated until 1942 when the students were transferred to the
 Allen Co High School. The elementary school continued until 1971 and then
 consolidated with White Plains and Allen Co Middle School. High school
 teachers included: Harry FRAIM, Mrs B O HINTON, Dorothy GARROT, Lula
 DALTON, Mary FRAIM, Claudius HARRIS, Jesse Lee WODWARD and Clara

Pisgah School is mentioned in the HIstory of Mt Union Association of
General Baptists in 1876-1975 and states that the school started in the old
Pisgah schoolhouse. Early trustees were: S A JONES, John HUDSON Teo BUTLER,
J R KELLY, A M COOK, T BRIDGEMAN, L M GRISSOM, J H DALTON, I J BRIDGEMAN
and G E JOHNSTON. Teachers were: J J ALEXANDER, Miss Eva MANNING and Warner
DALTON. It was located in the southern part of the county on the Pleasant
Grove Chruch Road.

Only one class photo is shown, class of 1900. Warner DALTON was the teacher
and the only identifiable students were: Pheba VINSON, Mary VINSON, Lizzie
VINSON DOUGLAS, Maggie Boyd DALTON.

you contact the public library in Scottsville to see if copies are still
available (I believe they are) ... it is so well done.

Pleasant Field School was built in 1926 on land purchased from Frank
JOHNSON. It was about 3 1/2 miles from Scottsville on the Holland Road. THe

Pleasant Hill School


This school was situated about 4 miles from Scottsville on the west side of
Holland Road, about 1/2 south of Pleasant Hill. The oldest records found

Pleasant Valley School


Pleasant Valley School was located on the Hade BELL Road, south of Hwy 100
East. The Retired Teachers were not able to locate anyinformation on the
school other than a "Colonel" COLE attended there. James LYLES &W H HEATH
were trustees in 1862.

The Port Oliver School was on land donated by Thomas GENTY and Younger
HOLDER. The nearest school was Gilead which was a great distance for the
children to to. The school was torn down in 1946. Some of the teachers
there included: Ethel WILLIAMS, Jeanetta STOVAL, Frances HOOD, Calma OLIVER
HACKER, Mary WALKER, Elizabeth YATES, Alma JOHNSON and Vernice SEXTON.

Raleigh School was built around 1870 on land donated by Nepthali TRACEY.
Trustees in 1896-1900 were: H T TRACY, N TRACY, D B BOHANNON, J G WHITE,

A 2nd building was built 2-3 yrs before it was destroyed by a tornado March

Red Hill School


Rough Hill, Red Hill and Shaw schools were consolidated in March of 1946
and a new school established near ROARK's Store in southeast Allen Co. This
was not farm from the TN line and the Monroe Co KY line. Chester ROARK
donated the land for Midway School and the school operated until 1955-56
class. From then on the students were transported to Mt. Zion Elementary
School. Teachers during this time included Duel CLAIBORNE, Andy DEVINE,
Boyd MANION, Susan LEWIS GOAD, Mrs Othie LOYD and C A DOSS. 

The class of 1946 included the following students with Chester DOSS as

Richards School


Richards School was in the Richards district and was in existence at least
by 1850 when a trustees report was found. John RICHARDS donated the land
and it was located 5 1/2 miles north of Scottsville on US 231 on 1332 west,
about one mile to Hickory Lane. The donation of land was in 1895, but it
appears a school by that name was in existence earlier. It was consolidated
with the new Halfway School in 1939 and the land went to John Frank
Richards. Trustees from 1896-1910 were: J P DODSON, M Y H AYERS, Tobias

Rocky Hill School


 In the 1800's, there was a school called Thorn Hill. Later, the school was
 relocated to a more central area, land was purchased from J D FOWLER on the
 Perrytown Road at the intersection of Perrytown-Alonzo Roads. People in the
 area gave money for the school as the county and state wouldn't provide
 funds. The school, Rocky Hill, had as early trustees: W A DENNIS, Emery
 TERREL, R W Twrril, J W LAMB, A W HILL, C MAYHEW, Edgar CLINE, C H MAYHEW,
 Albert O'NEAL & E WADE. Teachers included Enole STAMPS, Grace PITCHFORD,
