SALLIE SMITH, 81, of Barbourville, passed away Thursday, July 13, 2000 in the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. She was the daughter of Jim Riley and Nicey (Gambrel) Riley born to them on May 4, 1919 in Knox County. She was a homemaker. In 1934 she united in marriage with Burchell Smith and to this union nine children were born. Survivors include two daughters, Lucy Valentine of Bimble and Gracie Hubbard and husband Johnny of Barbourville; seven sons, Earl Smith and wife Laddie of Hamilton, Ohio, Dave Smith and wife Genetta of Manchester, Carl Smith and wife Oma of Dayton, Ohio, Charlie Smith and wife Marie of Dayton, Ohio, McKindley Smith and wife Carol of London, Bobby Smith and wife Sherry of Cannon, Elmer Smith and wife Geneva of Jarvis; one sister, Pearl Riley of Girdler; 20 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one very special little friend; and many other relatives and friends to mourn her passing. Funeral services were conducted in the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel Saturday, July 15 at 12 noon with the Rev. Sylvester Dunn and the Rev. James Mooneyham officiating. She was laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery. Hampton Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.
