Revolutionary War Pension Application of Samuel Rice

State of Kentucky
County of Jessamine

On this 20th day of August 1832 personally appeared in open court before the Justice of the county court of Jessamine County now sitting, Samuel Rice, a resident of Nicholasville in the County of Jessamine and State of Kentucky aged 71 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832.

That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated. That in the latter part of the summer of 1779 he served a tour of three months under Josiah Manston, Charlot County, Virginia, where he then resided, and marched from there to Williamsburg. From there we marched to Hampton and from thence to Portsmouth. At Portsmouth we were discharged by Genl Nelson.

I have long since lost my discharge in the fall of 1779. I served on other tours of three months under John Clayton from the same county, and marched to Petersburg and was discharged at the end of our tour of service by Genl Lawson. I have long since lost my discharge.

My leader as well as I now recollect was by the name of Barrister John Holcomb, and Major Randal commanded a regiment that was along at the same time. The lieutenant of my company was William Price.

In the spring 1780 I entered the service as a mounted volunteer under Capt Francis Scot and served a tour of three months. We marched from Charlotte to Hillsborough, North Carolina and discharged near there by Col Williams, who commanded the Infantry. I have long since lost my discharge.

He served in all in the war of the Revolution 9 months that he has no documentary evidence and that he knows of no person now living whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his service. He hereby reliquishes any claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension role of the agency of any state.

Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid.
