Schedule, County of Jessamine, S.S.

On this twentieth day of April 1832 personally appeared in open court being a court of record for said county of Jessamine, James Carothers, resident in said county aged 77 years, who being first duly sworn according to Law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provisions made by the Act of Congress of the 18th March 1818, and the 1st of May 1820. That he the said James Carothers enlisted for the term of three years on the 4th day of May in the year 1776 in the state of North Carolina in the company commanded by Captain Nelson in the Regiment commanded by Col. Thomas Pogue, in the line of the state of North Carolina on the North Carolina establishment, that he continued to serve in the said corps until the 4th May 1779 when he was discharged from the service in a place called Paramus near the mountains in the Jerses (as then called). That he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension except the present, that his name has been placed on pension list, that the number of pension certificate is 5287, and that he never before exhibited a schedule of his property, because he was ignorant of the law upon the subject, and that he has been using efforts to be reinstated on the pension list ever since he learned his right as a revolutionary soldier, but has been unsuccessful owing to the great but proper circumspection of the war department. His certificate bears date on the 13th January 1819 upon which he made perhaps three draws, he therefore hopes he will be reinstated and permitted to commence drawing where he quit upon said certificate, all which will appear by the papers in relation thereto at the war department from Lexington.
And in pursuance of the Act of the 1st May 1820, I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818, and that I have not since that time by gift, sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an Act of Congress entitled An Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval services of the United States in the Revolutionary War passed on the 18th day of March 1818, and that I have not nor had any person in trust for me any property or securities, contracts or debts due to me, nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed. He has no debts due him or in expectancy except what he now asks from his government. He now has one Bay mare about 16 years old as a present from his son worth 30 dollars. On the 18th day of March 1818 as well as he recollects he had two red cows worth 16 dollars and dark Bay mare then about 13 years old, then worth about 40 dollars, all which cows and horse have died since 1818. His wife died in the year 1800, his occupation is that of a farmer but is too old and infirm to work. He is not a housekeeper and is dependent upon his friends for support, he has no family, he again states that on the 18th March 1818 he had the two cows and the horse all worth 56 dollars. His mare which he has now worth 30 dollars.
