The Cave Springs whittlers
Now folks we thank you for taking time to read our "little old" Cave Springs news, but listen -- don't take it too seriously, for really we're a bunchj of whittlers, ay least a lot os us are. You have your notions about what whittlers are liable to tell.
That is we whittle when we have time, but lately we've been working so hard the Barlows are rusting in our pockets. Sweating on them makes them rust you know. Here at cave Springs we never go about much and all we know is what we read in the Sun, so for goodness sakes if you know anything put it in the paper so we will know it too.
We're not too citified to enjoy good country jokes or ham. We like life's news in all it's reality. Say ! How many kinds of wild weeds do you know that are good for sallet? We know dock, poke, white top, speckled beet, sheep mustard, two kinds of wild lettuce, old field bacon, cresses, dandelion, plantain, sheepsorrel, crows foot and woolen breaches.
We pick daisies and violets only when sallet is scarce. We have already begun eating vegetables from our garden, onions and radishes. Lettuce leaves are about the size of a postage stamp or bigger now.
Mrs. Wm. Campbell is said to be very sick, and "old" Green Abrams is bad off with kidney trouble.
Cave Springs has increased in population since last week. Ellis Shearer and his wife are the proud parents of a fine boy.
We congratulate them. Mrs. Era Gabbard and Miss Mary Abrams visited Berea last week on business.

Nudists legal ?
Then Governor Ruby Laffoon called for a special session of the Kentucky Legislature, in part to correct some errors made during the regular session.
It seems that in trying to pass a law forbidding nudist colonies, the bill was "enrolled erroneously" making the nudist colonies legal. The governor wanted the special session to correct that mistake, and some others.
They also needed to correct a bill regarding the labeling of flour, and amend a law allowing farmers to mortage future crops. The legislators would also be asked to pass an income tax and a gross receipts tax, as well as to provide revenue for schools and other departments of the state govenrment.
Looks like the budget troubles have been around for a long time !

Head-on wreck
A head-on collison which resulted in a big shake-up and shock occured on Birch Lick Sunday night, when the small truck of the McKee Grocery Co. and the car of Judge Hundley ran together. In the truck were Mr. and Mrs.Leslie Lainhart, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Murphy, Mrs. J.C. Morris, Misses Elsie Lainhart, Edith Morris and Jessie Simpson. In the car were Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Hundley Jr., Mr. Brewer and Miss Hundley. Shock and bruises were the greatest injury occupants received, although both the car and the truck were badly damaged.

The road law has not changed, It is your duty to see that each and every hand works this full six days. if necessary to put and keep your section of road in repair. Signed by J.J. Davis Judge Jackson County Court

To the people of Jackson County

There seems to be a misunder-standing among the people as to whether all able-bodied citizens of the county are required to work on the county roads. The law has not changed. Don't be deceived about this matter, when you have been warned it is your duty as a law-abiding citizen to respond to the call. Overseers should not work the roads on days the hands in your community can get work on the relief jobs. This was also signed by J.J. Davis County Judge

Two dead after rows in school elections Red Bird Ky., July 15 - Bullets followed sharp words in two county subdistrict trustee elections yesterday and today. Two men were dead and two other wounded, at two communities with in a few miles of this little southeastern Kentucky town. Reports from offical sources were lacking and mountaineers are traditionally silent about such quarrels. It was known today, however, that Deputy Sheriff John Wooton of Leslie County and Willis Sizemore were dead of gunshot wounds after an election dispute near Big Creek. Hugh Spurlock was in a Lexington hospital tonight with wounds received in another election dispute over the eligibility of a voter, and Kelly Sams was wounded as the out-come of an argument over whether a certain voter was qualified to vote for school trustee at the Langdon School House on Bear Creek. Paid front page advertisement - Robsion's machine breaking down. The opposition to Edwin P. Morrow is growing desperate. Look out for last minute false advertisements and campaign falsehoods of every character. Beaten Men are desperate. False rumors and base slanders may be expected from them. Robsion's defeat is certain. He cannot count safely upon carrying but one county and that is his own. Morrow's victory is certain. Republicans will not vote against their greatest leader. Soldiers will vote for Ed Morrw, an ex-soldier. Robsion wins the election according to the following week's Sun
