Deplorable Accident. Willl Hurt Loses Right arm By Having
That Member Caught In A Fodder
Shredder
The Lancaster Record
Newspaper clipping came from scrapbook of Susan Waldridge Hurt, wife of Elijah Hurt. Contributed
by Sandra Hurt Norris.
On last Monday afternoon while the machine of Mr. Joshua Hurt was shredding fodder on the farm of Capt. J.A.
Doty, Will Hurt who was assisting in feeding the machine had his right arm caught in the machinery and before he
could disentangle it, the member almost to the elbow was ground to a pulp. He was hurried to town in an
automobile and taken to the office of Dr. Kinnaird. Drs. Acton and Dr. Kinnaird amputated the injured arm about
midway between the elbow and shoulder. He was then removed to the home of Mrs. Davis Prather where he remained
until Tuesday afternoon when he was taken to his fathers home near Point Leavell. He is doing nicely and it is
hoped and thought Will suffered no bad results further than the loss of his arm, which of itself is bad
enought.
The young man had a close call for his life, and but for his remarkable nerve and presence of mind in using all
of his strength in pulling the imprisoned arm from the machine, his entire body would have been drawn in
notwithstanding the fact that one of his brothers rushed to and reversed and stopped the engine as quickly as
possible.
Will Hurt is 23 years of age, the youngest of five brothers and is a model young man. He was married but a few
weeks ago to Miss Annie Dollins, daughter of Mr. James Dollins of Point Leavell. Great sympathy is felt for the
young man in his misfortune.
