Lower Benson Church

In 1804, Samuel Shannon organized the Lower Benson Church located near Bridgeport on lower Benson Creek.  Shannon served the Upper Benson and Lower Benson churches
until his resignation in 1812.  When the Upper Benson Church was dissolved in 1822, many of the members joined the Lower Benson Church.  Together in 1848, they built a more
modern church on the Louisville Turnpike near Bridgeport and the Lower Benson Church became the Franklin Church.  In 1873, the church dropped ties to the Presbyterian
Church of America and became a congregation of the Southern Presbyterian Church.  During the years to come many of the members began to move into town with no church
to worship.  In 1880, the new congregation  purchased a lot on Steele Street where they constructed a church which was dedicated on June 3, 1884 as the South Frankfort
Presbyterian Church.  The Franklin Church was dissolved two years later and its' congregation joined with the South Frankfort Presbyterian Church.  The congregation grew and soon
the small church was bursting at the seams.  The present building was erected on the old site and dedicated on November 6, 1904.  This church sustained substantial damage when a
fire broke out during the morning of April 15, 1928.  Major reconstruction of the damage was made according to the original place and the church was rededicated on March 3, 1929.
