Clinton County KY Historical Society

Clinton County was formed in 1835 from Wayne and Cumberland counties, an area long shaped by the Upper Cumberland River system and early migration routes from Tennessee into south-central Kentucky. Settlement accelerated in the early 19th century as families moved north along river valleys, establishing small farms, mills, and trading points tied closely to neighboring Tennessee communities. Albany, the county seat, developed as a regional courthouse and commercial center serving a largely agricultural population.
Clinton County’s records reflect strong cross-border family networks, frequent land transactions along waterways, and a history influenced by tobacco farming, livestock, and timber, making it especially important for researchers to study county, regional, and Tennessee records together when tracing early families.
