Generation No. 1 1. THOMAS6 VIVION* (HANNIBAL5 VYVYAN*, HANNIBAL4, JOHN3, JOHN2, MACHAEL1 UNKNOWN) was born 15 April 1627 in St. Columb Major, Cornwall, ENG, and died 1670 in Isle of Wight, VA. He married MARY OWEN Bef. 1663. She was born Bet. 1613 - 1636, and died Bet. 1658 - 1724. Notes for THOMAS VIVION*: Said to have been a general in the English Army and to have served with honor before his age of retirement. Perhaps the move to America brought about a change in the spelling of the name from VIVIAN to VIVION. One branch of the family, whose ancestor Richard was knighted by King Charles I in 1636, occupies Trelowarren Manor in Cornwall, and they have spelled the name VYVYAN for centuries. In 1999, only the spellings VIVIAN and VYVYAN are found in the UK telephone directory, with the VIVIANs being in the majority. A correspondent says that there is a Cornish saying, "The Vivians with I's would give their eyes to be Vivians with Y's." There was a Joel VIVION b. 1620 who obtained 50 acres 21 Sept 1638 for transporting John Greenfield. The land adjoined the land of Thomas Smith. This is recorded in the VA Land Office in patent Book 1, Page 597. The relationship of this Joel VIVION to John VIVION is not known. Downard - e-mail ab4rx@iglou.com "Virginia Historical Magazine", Virginia Council Journals, Vol. 34, pg. 347-349 The following account is attributed to Mrs. Harvie Jordan in an article published in "Hearst�s Sunday America," Atlanta, Georgia, July 13, 1930, and is reported in "Vivion Family of Virginia" by Charles Brunk Heinemann. "Captain John Vivion of the Middle Plantation (Williamsburg, Va.) first came to Virginia as an emissary of Charles II of England, one hundred years before the Revolutionary War. His official mission was to inquire into and report to the King the causes of the disturbances between Governor Berkley of Virginia, and Nationiel Bacon, who was at that time commanding all the military forces of the Province. "The real causes of the trouble were due to an effort on the part of Bacon to bring retribution upon the Indian tribes around Jamestown who had risen and massacred many of the whites. Berkley sided with the Indians. "After John Vivion�s investigation of the facts he became heartily in sympathy with Colonel Bacon and the Colonists. "Governor Berkley�s niece, Diana Cummings, was also in deep sympathy with Bacon�s cause and opposed to the tyranny of her uncle. "Tradition says that the information Vivion obtained was largely through Diana Cummings. She kept Vivion posted as to the plots that were taking place at the palace; among other things, the departure from Jamestown of a commission up the James River to "Curles Neck", Colonel Bacon�s home, sent by Governor Berkley to inform Bacon that he was ready to sign a treaty of peace and to invite him down to Jamestown to partake of a royal banquet prepared for him at the palace. This commission went up the James River on the "Adam and Eve", a pleasure ship owned by Governor Berkley. "Diana Cummings, being warned of this fact, and knowing her uncle�s deception, imparted the information to Captain John Vivion and requested him to ride to "Curles Neck" and warn Bacon of the ruse. With some friends he departed at once, but before they reached their destination the "Adam and Eve", had come and gone with Colonel Bacon as its guest on what he supposed was a friendly mission. "Captain Vivion and his friends rode rapidly back to Jamestown, gathering as they returned, colonists along the route, some armed with primitive flintlocks, cutlasses, etc., and as the "Adam and Eve" was drawing up to the wharf, Captain Vivion at the head of his followers, numbering 100 men, advanced to receive them in a very unexpected way. "They rescued Colonel Bacon, took possession of the ship, advanced on the Palace, captured Governor Berkley, and made him sign officially, attaching the seal of the King, Bacon�s command making him Colonel in command of all the Virginia forces. "When Bacon�s rebellion subsided and conditions quieted down, Captain John Vivion married Diana Cummings and settled in that portion of Virginia known as Middlesex Co. "Their daughter Diana Vivion married Garrett Minor and ther son John Minor was the great-grandfather of the present well-known Vivian Minoe Fleming, historian of Fredericksburg, Virginia. But through the badness of the weather and scattered situation, nothing of importance was don till April the 3d 1784. Then having met at brother Elkins, appointed Brother Phillip Bush Clerk. Also received by letter Joseph and Milley Embrey. Also appointed church meeting on the fourth Saturday in each month. Met and nothing to record. Adjourned until March meeting. April 23d, 1784. The body (the church) remained at Holston until 1783, raising three crops. moved to Lewis Craigs Station on Gilbert's Creek in Lincoln Co., KY, where they remained until 12 Nov 1785, or about two years. In 1785 they moved to the waters of Lower Howard's Creek, in what is now Clark Co., and occupied the lands that had been located for them by Capt. Billy Bush. It is possible he died before his father (1788).
