On the frontpiece
of this Testament is
written: "H. H.
Mansfield Testament,
bought August 5,
1859. The young
living in
Scottsville, Allen
County, KY at this
time." These
names also appear,
written at random on
this same page: Mrs.
Martha B. Hinton, C.
B. Mansfield,
Scottsville; Alice;
Martha Hinton;
Caroline B.
Morris."
On the reverse side
of the frontpiece is
written: "Mrs.
Martha B.
Hinton." Below
this name is
written, "Book
given by Martha R.
Mansfield."
Under this is a name
which is too dim to
discern.
Pasted to the
inside front cover
of this Bible is a
newspaper clipping.
It is not dated nor
is the name of the
newspaper from which
it was taken
apparent. The
clipping reads as
follows (with
spelling and
punctuation exactly
as it appeared in
the article):
DIED. Sunday,
August 20th, 1876,
Judge Wm. Mansfield,
in the 72nd year of
his age.
He was born in
Barren Co. KY.,
January 25th 1805,
where he was reared;
and spent the early
part of his life in
teaching school. He
was married to Miss
Martha Johnston,
March 26th, 1826,
after which he went
into the mercantile
business at Ritter's
Mill, in Barren
County.
He moved to
Scottsville about
the year 1837 when
he again engaged in
the mercantile
business in which he
continued for
upwards of 21 years,
when he was elected
a Justice of the
Peace, and
afterwards to the
office of County
Judge, which
position he held for
two terms, since
which time he has
filled the office of
Master Commissioner,
being re-appointed
at the last term of
the Circuit Court.
He was an excellent
citizen, beloved by
all who knew him. As
an official, he was
kind, courteous, and
obliging; as a
Christian, he set an
example worthy of
imitation by all and
his death makes a
broken link in
society, not easily
filled. His bereaved
family have our
heart felt sympathy,
and most profound
wishes for their
welfare."
