Pre-Settlement & Early Exploration

Pre-1700s – Native American hunting grounds and buffalo traces crossed the region.

Late 1700s – Buffalo Trace became a key migration route; early land surveys under Virginia laws.


Early Settlement Period

1780s–1790s – First settlers arrived; settlement near Salt River, Beaver Creek, and Glens Creek.

1792 – Kentucky admitted as the 15th state; the area remained part of Franklin, Mercer, and Washington counties.


County Formation & Growth

1827 – Anderson County formed from Franklin, Mercer, and Washington counties. Lawrenceburg became the county seat.

1820s–1830s – First courthouse erected; deed books, tax lists, and court records begin.


Antebellum Period

1830s–1860 – Agriculture, milling, and distilling dominate the economy; enslaved labor used in many enterprises.


Civil War Era

1861–1865 – Kentucky remained a border state with residents serving in both Union and Confederate forces.

After 1827, most primary records (deeds, wills, court minutes, tax lists, etc.) are located at the Anderson County Clerk’s office and local repositories.
